Re no.8, the Dunblane Massacre, Britain reacted to Thomas Hamilton's vile crime by banning pistols. There has been no repetition of this event since the pistol ban was enacted. Of course, if I can't use nukes I will send Bomber Command; and if I can't have Lancaster bombers I will employ railway guns; and if I can't use long range artillery I will send balloon bombs and so on. People do kill people, but if people can't buy automatic weapons, they are going to be able to kill people less quickly and in lower numbers.

Who knows how many more times something like this will happen? I am sure though that something like this will happen again; and that nothing will be learned and nothing will change.
Even if it happened every day, they would not be able to do much, pre 1987 automatic weapons legally available, no check on ammo sales, what is the shelf life on ammo ?, America is screwed for the foreseeable

Nothing is going to happen. News of this broke overnight Monday. It's a little after 10pm Tuesday and the story is already being pushed to a sidebar so that CNN can get back to banging the drum about Russian election ads on Facebook. Las Vegas will be off the radar by Friday and so will all the gun control chatter.

You'd sit on the balcony of an evening listening to the daft bastards just over the hill blazing away at Christ knows what till it got dark .

Where's the fun in that I thought; guns are shit, buy guitars instead.

I don't believe he used an automatic weapon, the weapons shown so far are mainly normal semiauto AR15 variants, mostly high end - some with bump fire stocks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=z2d6OLs5rZw He was hosing a crowd from 400 yards away using rapid fire, bullet dispersion would be the size of a house. You can buy these weapons in most states today. Ammunition shelf life is usually 50 plus years, well stored WWII ammo still can be found for sale - mainly for ammunition collections - but most would still fire. (people collect them for their headstamps.)

In all likelihood, there will probably be a run on these firearms. No need for an automatic weapon.

America screwed for the foreseeable future? Kinda doubt that, we have no shortage of guns, but do have a shortage of psychopaths of this type. How many mass killings of six year olds have we since Newton, certainly not a flood of them - ? Probably will see copy cats in the future, not limited to the US.

Any thoughtful member will be cautious about stating simplified conclusions. EXCEPT: the gun Fantasy and Fascination is deep in America's soul. That was manifest even before this. Our culture is saturated in it. I don't think any other nation or culture can be used for comparison.

This man was not disadvantaged or slighted by society in any way. Financially he was on the border comfortable / wealthy. It is emerging that he had a very large gun & ammo stash & had modified rifles with a "bump stock", to = machine guns. Age 64, it's not High-T, but maybe there were medical issues, drugs. Like Hemingway's "not a man anymore." & It seems his father (whom he hardly knew) was a deceptive, clever crook, once on FBI most wanted, called "psycho & suicidal." But so little contact, you would say more likely genetic.

Point being, you can have all kinds of other things that intersect with Gun Mania. But is only here, in America, they do.

Some talk in the US about making 'Bump Stocks' (that Paddock legally bought then used to make his weapons into machine guns) illegal.

(Just going on the arguments used by pro-gun members)
Surely 'the bad guys' will already have them or get them illegally. So it will be better that 'the good guys' have them as well to stop 'the bad guys'. So the logical step is to make machine guns fully legal and available for everyone. Problem solved (again).

If you want to bump fire, you don't need a special stock.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bD213VW6WjY

Most shooters want accuracy, not hosing an area.

Please continue with your damning of the American Gun Culture.

I would predict that ISIS will gather a squad of suicidal adherents, take a number of rooms in a hotel overlooking an open air crowd and copy this idiot. Not only will they shoot a lot of people, but they will have plenty of trampling casualties to add to their damage numbers.

Surely they are scouting locations as we breathe.
