Entirely subjective, these are the games I spent the most time playing, in no particular order:
SSI Computer Ambush -- squad level combat on an Apple II, a poky 6802 taking a long time to make moves, way longer than me. I think that's the last time I could say that. A great game for its time. The Ultima series -- big world, D&D theme, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. First computer Dungeon crawl to really get it right. Wasted hours on that one Sid Meier Railroad Tycoon: brilliant game -- first game you could win in different ways, as a builder, as a speculator. Played this entire nights. "Empire" -- the original, by Walter Bright-- grand-daddy of all the conquer the world games. "Suspended" -- Infocom text adventure. Most people got hooked on Zork, but I like Suspended best. A really interesting game "Dune II" = first real time strategy game (eg what you know later in "Command & Conquer") Starflight [1987] really smart game, first procedural universe I can remember. Some really funny alien races, particularly the slimy Spemin, who would always grovel if you threatened them. Don't play much at all these days, but when I do its Civilization V, great game like all the Civs . . . one of these days I'll make the effort to learn Civ VI Darkest Dungeon. A really fun dungeon crawl game, reminiscent of some of the early days (see Wizardry above) with some great graphics touches. |
