Default Players Magazine Interview

Sahara
The Reigning Queen Of Black Adult Videos
By H.L. Sorrell
Players Magazine, Volume 12, Number 12, May 1986

With the growing popularity of adult video movies, the inevitable has occurred; a star hierarchy has emerged. And the performer who currently reigns as the undisputed queen of black adult video is known as Sahara.
At her warm and artfully decorated Malibu beach house, Sahara reflected upon her recent trip to Europe, her prominence in the developing adult entertainment industry and where her life as a private person is heading.

PLAYERS: What kind of child were you?
SAHARA: I was an individualist. I believed very strongly in my individuality. I wanted to try to discover everything my own way. It wasn’t like I was the black sheep or anything. But I’ve always had my own little quirks about me. But my family understood me and I’ve always had the support of my family to go out and do whatever I wanted to do.

PLAYERS: So when did you get the inkling to become a performer?
SAHARA: I didn’t start out with the idea of being an erotic film actress. It just kinda fell into place. I always had been sexually aware. I always had the desire to try different things. I was never inhibited, never. So being that way, it became easy for me to “do it” in front of other people. The first time I was exposed to a situation that wasn’t a personal one on one, was at a swing party. I didn’t know about it in advance, I was taken there by a date. When I got there, people were running around with no clothes on! I said to myself “Wow, I had heard about these things, but this is wild!”

PLAYERS: How old were you then?
SAHARA: Uh uh, I’m not telling any ages (laughs).

PLAYERS: Okay, How long ago was that?
SAHARA: (smiles) It was about six years ago. But I wasn’t freaked out by it. I just thought it was really wild. It was like all the fantasies you’ve ever had when you’re growing up. You always read a dirty book some point in life and there are pictures of people freaking. I saw that people really do these things, the strange positions on the zodiac calendar, you know what I mean?

PLAYERS: Was that here in California?
SAHARA: Yes, that happened up north. I’m a California native from the Bay Area. I moved to Los Angeles in 1982.

PLAYERS: So what was the next step?
SAHARA: I had gotten into fashion modeling. And I was hired to do an erotic shoot that wasn’t supposed to be nude, but it turned out that way. But the nudity was very sensuous, with lots of eroticism.

PLAYERS: Was that for a magazine layout?
SAHARA: Yes. That was for a European magazine layout, for a photographer I had worked with on straight things. One of the sets we shot was a body painting layout. My whole body was painted in very erotic designs so I kind of got into my body. After that, one thing lead to another. I was asked “Do you want to do this, do you want to do that?” And that went on until I was offered my first X-rated video. Someone asked me if I could perform sex acts on video without freaking out. I said I don’t know. But I tried it and I guess I did okay.

PLAYERS: What was your first adult video?
SAHARA: Black Taboo was my very first video. I might add a horrible video. It took me a few years after before I could distinguish between a bad script and one that was good.

PLAYERS: Did you and Jeannie Pepper star together in that video?
SAHARA: Yes we did, with Toney El-ay. Tony El-ay was the first male I worked with. Yes, that was the first video but I didn’t find it difficult. I was a little nervous in the beginning simply because I didn’t know those people very well. They too were not accustomed to making videos. In fact, it was the first video for many of that cast. It was difficult because I didn’t have very many professionals to play off.

PLAYERS: Speaking of Toney El-ay, he’s always spoken very highly of you. He’s described you as “… a real go-getter…” Although he obviously intended it as a compliment, what do you think he meant by that?
SAHARA: I think he meant that I’m on of those people who really memorized their lines. I believe that I’m on the set to perform a specific task; that task is to excite people, to entertain people in a sensual way. So I come in with the attitude, I’ll talk and laugh with you but when it’s time to work, it’s time to work. I want to shoot and I want to get it done. I don’t tolerate people just screwing up because it’s not necessary. I come in for a reason, I do my job and I go about my everyday life.

PLAYERS: Now, you’ve made quite a splash in the business . . .
SAHARA: (laughs) I don’t know how that happened either, it just happened!

PLAYERS: It did just happen. But you are considered the leading black actress in the adult entertainment industry. How does it feel to have that kind of start status and having gotten it so quickly?
SAHARA: It’s nice, it’s real sweet! (laughs) I’ll be straight up. To have people call me and ask me can I do this or that, it’s nice. If I don’t want to do it I have the option to say no. However, if I were a person just starting out, in it just to make money, I’d have to take everything that came along. It’s nice because I get recognition. I get my name put first on the video box cover (giggles) I know that’s silly but it’s fun too. I don’t like the recognition all the time, when I’m with friends for example. I’ve had people come up to me in small towns here, even in Europe, and say “. . . didn’t you do so and so . . .” or “I saw you in such and such, you were great.” And I’ll say “Oh really, please take your hand off my shoulder now.” (laughs).

PLAYERS: But that’s the price you pay for being a star, yes?
SAHARA: Yes, that’s the price one pays. Because if I put some videos out there, people who are erotic people will see them.

PLAYERS: There are a growing number of black performers in adult videos, yet few blacks are cast in X-rated films that get theatrical release, why?
SAHARA: The market now is in video. People are into sex movies at home rather than going to a theater to see an X-rated movie. Films don’t pay for themselves as much as videos do and that has a lot to do with it.

PLAYERS: Many of the roles you blacks are asked to play seem to be racial jokes. For example, in one of your recent videos Let Me Tell Ya ‘Bout Black Chicks, you had sex with two white guys wearing Klu Klux Klan hoods. How did you come to grips with that?
SAHARA: It wasn’t even a matter of coming to grips with it. I was called to play a specific part. Everything in those videos is the invention of somebody’s mind, it’s never based on fact. The role wasn’t something that offended me. And I don’t feel people should be offended by it. Especially black people, simply because it was something done to entertain not to offend and that’s exactly how I looked at it. If I get a part I feel is degrading than I’m not going to do it. In that sense it wasn’t degrading. I mean I didn’t have to call anybody “massah”. I will not do that. I think of all the things that I’ve done, I’ve played a maid character maybe a total of three times. But they’ve been the type of maids that are like Europeans/French cutie maids no somebody with a turban on her god damn head. I wouldn’t do that, that’s not my style.

PLAYERS: There are other things actresses are asked to do in adult movies. On is the obligatory girl/girl scene. Now, you’ve performed a few of those on-camera yourself. Did you ever engage in that kind of sexual activity before you got into adult movies?
SAHARA: Yeah, sure I did. I’ve been bisexual for long time.

PLAYERS: Do you think this is a practice that other women may be attracted to?
SAHARA: Definitely. I know women for a fact who are excited by the thought of being with another woman. It’s something that’s really sensual. I don’t know that statistics but I know there are a lot of women who find that really erotic.

PLAYERS: Adult movies are obtaining a great deal of popularity. Some legal factions in our society are saying that actresses who perform acts of sex in adult movies for pay are simply prostitutes. How do you react to that?
SAHARA: (Waves of laughter) I, I’m laughing as you can see because I, I am not a prostitute number one, okay? Number two: It is my occupation to excite, just as it’s someone else’s occupation as an attorney to defend a person who cannot defend himself, the same as a doctor who is hired to help a patient. A wife is a prostitute when you look at it, one that doesn’t work, one that takes the kids shopping. She has a baby and that’s a form of prostitution that enables her to keep money coming in. So don’t get down on an actress who’s getting paid to have relations with other people. It’s done in private. What does a wife do? Her man comes home, she cooks and she screws him at night. Is that not a form of prostitution? She’s not working but she’s getting money, her expenses are taken care of. So if they want to call me a prostitute then call half the women in middle America prostitutes.

PLAYERS: How long do you plan on staying in the business?
SAHARA: Not long. I’m already into other things, different investments. I have an art business now where I buy and sell fine art. Some of the pieces you see here, although part of my private collection, are representative of what I sell.

PLAYERS: Have you considered crossing over into general films?
SAHARA: No, because I’m not really interested in being an actress. I’m interested in being erotic.

PLAYERS: As an erotic superstar in the X-rated genre, do you feel you owe a debt of gratitude to predecessors such as Sparcy Vasc and Desiree West for paving the way for you?
SAHARA: (silence, a pensive sigh, then . . .) No. I believe that even in straight films when there was a long time when black people weren’t allowed, that people paved the way sure. But I don’t believe that the people that followed them ought to be grateful. Because maybe if it had been down the line they would have been the ones who had paved the way rather than the ones who walked along the pavement. SO, we could have as easily done this now as they did then. It has a lot to do with changing values in this society and the world. I don’t believe anybody has any idea as to when something is going to change. So, I believe I am where I am because I just went out and did something because the mood hit me, not because the work of someone else helped me along the way.

PLAYERS: Alright, you don’t plan to continue your acting career much longer. Other established actresses who felt that way found themselves leaning toward producing. Have you ever considered producing videos?
SAHARA: Oh yea, sure I have. That enters everybodys mind because you find out the best financial advantages. I’m seriously considering producing a video.

PLAYERS: Would it star you as well?
SAHARA: No. I won’t be seen in it at all. I thought about doing on I’d write, produce and star in, on of those deals like Barbara Streisand. But I think that would be a lot of work considering m other activities.

PLAYERS: Is this your dream house?
SAHARA: I don’t really have a dream house. I just like to be comfortable, feel good and relaxed. If wherever I am I feel relaxed then that’ my dream house.

PLAYERS: Do you have time to enjoy these lovely surroundings?
SAHARA: Oh yea, not all the time but whenever I can. I’m a homebody. I don’t go out to party that much at all. Because I’m content in my home I enjoy spending a lot of time here. A lot of people don’t like where they are. They don’t want to be there ten minutes longer than they have to. I rarely invite people here. Every blue moon someone will come by here. This is my space, I like being here. I conduct a lot of business here, my office is here. I have to be here a lot to conduct business outside of making movies.

PLAYERS: Getting back to the movies, what in the adult industry do you think requires the most improvement or change?
SAHARA: The scripts. We could use some better writers. We could use some better actors and actresses. That’s not to say that they aren’t sexually exciting. But we need to portray them a little more intelligently.

PLAYERS: Some of the female producers I was referring to while ago are responsible for a trend towards softer X-rated movies. Do you feel this trend towards softcore porn will be a step up from the hardcore predominately offered now?
SAHARA: No. I believe we’ve already had soft porn. It doesn’t take a step up or a step back. It’s possible to have both without sacrificing on for the other. I like soft porn. I like nice slow erotic movies. But when I want to be excited I like to turn on the VCR and get hot. I want to see stuff! So I believe it’s possible to have the two.

PLAYERS: When we were talking earlier you said there was not special man in your life. Or is that a mistatement on my part?
SAHARA: That’s a mistatement.

PLAYERS: So there is a special man in your life?
SAHARA: I didn’t say that either.

PLAYERS: But anyone you would share your life with would know what you do for a living. Do you think that would pose a problem for him?
SAHARA: Anybody that I’d spent time with would have to know that up front. If he understands that, then obviously he should be willing to deal with that. Otherwise he would make that known from the beginning and maybe we wouldn’t even be spending time together.

PLAYERS: What other talents do you have that your fans may not be aware of?
SAHARA: Ummmm, probably that fact that I speak French fluently. I was going to study languages to be an interpreter for the United Nations.

PLAYERS: How long ago?
SAHARA: About four years ago was the last time I thought about it, just before I got into this business. It would have been a lot of time involved and a lot of time away from the United States. To learn and master a language one has to go abroad and spend a lot of time there, sometimes eight months to a year in each place. That would have been really difficult.

PLAYERS: Do you sing?
SAHARA: I don’t have the heart to get up in front of people and sing. That’s strange considering that I’m the obvious exhibitionist I am. And I can do it if a role I’m playing calls for it. But don’t put me under the lights and say “Sing to these people.” (smiles.)

PLAYERS: This last time in Europe, what were you dong there?
SAHARA: I was modeling designer fashions.

PLAYERS: Print?
SAHARA: No, runway modeling, which I like a lot because there’s a live audience in front of you. I get to see first hand their reaction to the clothes an to me.

PLAYERS: Do you think you’ll go back to do that again?
SAHARA: Oh sure, I enjoy Europe very much.

PLAYERS: So what kind of person is Sahara? Is she temperamental? How would you best describe yourself?
SAHARA: I would describe Sahara as basically a really warm person with a wonderful sense of humor, very earthy and straightforward. She’ll get pissed off if there’s a reason for it, but otherwise she’s the most pleasant person you’ll ever want to know.

Default Sahara in the Dutch mag "Dildo 22"

Sahara was the prettiest and sexiest black pornstar of the 80's IMHO.

Here are four pics with Sahara and an unknown but familiar (to me) blonde from Dildo 22 (release year unknown, but probably sometime in the 80's). Big thanks to bb69 for the full mag post, which you can find here
