Yep - one year I tried to play a team consisting almost enitrely of ex-LUFC players; I still tend to avoid those I really don't like - so not picking the likes of Rooney on principle has cost me overall. Similarly, there's been some fantastic players - Makelele, Kante, who earn bugger all in the FL terms but you'd have as one of the first names in a real team.

One of the most intriguing but seriously difficult to administer variations was a work group who decided that they'd form a league, but team selection was conducted one evening in the works social club as an 'auction', with the main premise being that any player could only be picked by one team. It meant that it got very competitive and transfers between teams did take place for 'money' plus a couple of pints and someone paying for the snooker on Friday night. Any player being transfreerd out went back into the main pool and you could only buy from that pool. You were also limited in terms of the transfer kitty, so say £100m - if a bidding war took place over say, Harry Kane, then the bidders had to ensure that they could afford not only him, but also to be able to pick up a squad from the rest of the players left, or their bid became invalid.
A great idea but not long lived, due to the time it took the poor organiser to admin around a dozen teams every single week.

Default You gotta laugh... :-)

Wolves beat champions Manchester City to win the pre-season Premier League Asia Trophy following a bizarre penalty shootout in China.

Four of the first five penalties were saved or missed before keeper Rui Patricio denied City's Lukas Nmecha to give Wolves a 3-2 shootout victory.

The game was level at 0-0 following 90 minutes of an intriguing match in which City dominated possession.

City's Raheem Sterling had also missed a penalty in the first half.
Didn't they care ? The Man Cty players ? Only pre-Season, which is about fitness and game-play, in the main. Liverpool lost, over in the USA, playing with their U23 squad. Man Cty were good enough to put a substantial 1st team squad out - minus Augero - Wolves put their 99% 1st team out.
The Panalties were a joke, as I got me BBC updates.

Quote:
Absolutely bonkers penalty shootout. Five missed penalties. FIVE! And some of the players who missed you'd usually put your money on...

Conor Coady - missed

Ilkay Gundogan
- missed

Ryan Bennett - scored

David Silva - missed

Max Kilman - missed

Danilo - scored

Taylor Perry - scored

Aleix Garcia - scored

Ruben Vinagre - scored

Lukas Nmecha
- missed
Would have been a Trophy, prior to the Community Match at Wembley.

So... only 4 Trophies left for Pep ---- joking ---- but truly senseless performance. A real "Wait-A-Minute" moment.

The morning after the night before.

I have picked my team and added myself to Code: gk50e3 & yhd3j5

Sometimes Sunday morning has a brighter side and once the league starts people will be able to laugh.

Carroll & Bale seen in Newcastle.

The England winger, 18, Callum Hudson-Odoi, handed in a transfer request in January after Chelsea rejected a £35m bid from Bayern Munich.
But he is set to sign a new contract before the start of the season.

The youngster is understood to have been encouraged by positive words from new manager Frank Lampard, who said he wanted Hudson-Odoi to stay.

Callum Hudson-Odoi has agreed a five-year deal worth more than £100,000 a week to stay at Chelsea.

Anyway, well done Chelsea, beating Barca 2-1 in their friendly tonight.
One thing that really annoys me with many, many European teams is the player losing the ball, immediately goes to ground with a hand-up for a foul.
Barca do it in their sleep, it's in their DNA I think. The first half, blimey.

It would be a good bet for a bookie, "how many players appeal for a foul".
I think Barca actually weren't interested from half-time. Yet only 1-0 down.
Like Man City the other night.

Still, only pre-season-friendlies.

Pre season friendlies? Bah. Leeds travel to Australia to play Man Utd in Sydney and get thumped 4-0; 3,000+ LUFC supporters attend.
We then go to Saudi, only to lose 4-2 to a local side you've never heard of - cue 40% of supporters on social media wondering, quite reasonably, why the club are still yet to sign a striker, a need established beyond all doubt last January and the lack of which saw us not get promoted, in some trainwreck style. Or a replacement and sorely needed central defender, having sold our best one (Pontus) to Brentford, following a falling out with Bielsa.
The remaining 60% who are frankly in-denial, brand-loyalty, fanatics moan about any supporters having the temerity to moan about our club and shouldn't we think about 'supporting' another team. Yep. football's started.

I ran across this when I was looking for something else, and couldn't think of any other thread that I could put it in, thought you here might like it. The cover art is by Walter Molino, who did a lot for this newspaper.

Our bloody owner said something similar some years ago! There were some Saddlers supporters who had the nerve to question Uncle Jeff Bonser's reign and his response was something like "if you don't like it, go and support Bournemouth, Luton or Rotherham". Well, thanks Jeff for that. What a way to treat supporters who pay a fair amount to watch games.i wonder what happened to those three clubs? Oh, hang on - they seem to be doing a lot better than we are.

After that gaffe, we have hardly heard from Uncle Jeef since.....
