One of the most intriguing but seriously difficult to administer variations was a work group who decided that they'd form a league, but team selection was conducted one evening in the works social club as an 'auction', with the main premise being that any player could only be picked by one team. It meant that it got very competitive and transfers between teams did take place for 'money' plus a couple of pints and someone paying for the snooker on Friday night. Any player being transfreerd out went back into the main pool and you could only buy from that pool. You were also limited in terms of the transfer kitty, so say £100m - if a bidding war took place over say, Harry Kane, then the bidders had to ensure that they could afford not only him, but also to be able to pick up a squad from the rest of the players left, or their bid became invalid. A great idea but not long lived, due to the time it took the poor organiser to admin around a dozen teams every single week. |

Anyway, well done Chelsea, beating Barca 2-1 in their friendly tonight. One thing that really annoys me with many, many European teams is the player losing the ball, immediately goes to ground with a hand-up for a foul. Barca do it in their sleep, it's in their DNA I think. The first half, blimey. It would be a good bet for a bookie, "how many players appeal for a foul". I think Barca actually weren't interested from half-time. Yet only 1-0 down. Like Man City the other night. Still, only pre-season-friendlies. .................................................. ..... Pre season friendlies? Bah. Leeds travel to Australia to play Man Utd in Sydney and get thumped 4-0; 3,000+ LUFC supporters attend.
We then go to Saudi, only to lose 4-2 to a local side you've never heard of - cue 40% of supporters on social media wondering, quite reasonably, why the club are still yet to sign a striker, a need established beyond all doubt last January and the lack of which saw us not get promoted, in some trainwreck style. Or a replacement and sorely needed central defender, having sold our best one (Pontus) to Brentford, following a falling out with Bielsa. The remaining 60% who are frankly in-denial, brand-loyalty, fanatics moan about any supporters having the temerity to moan about our club and shouldn't we think about 'supporting' another team. Yep. football's started. |

La Domenica dei Corriere 1955 Oct 9th cover
I ran across this when I was looking for something else, and couldn't think of any other thread that I could put it in, thought you here might like it. The cover art is by Walter Molino, who did a lot for this newspaper.
