Le Silencieux (1973)
Trailer Scientist Anton Haliakov (Lino Ventura) is a member of a Soviet delegation on a visit to London. On their way to the hotel, a car accident is staged and Haliakov kidnapped by the MI5. It is soon revealed that Haliakov is actually French and his real name Clément Tibčre. Sixteen years prior to the events in the film, Tibčre was kidnapped by the KGB. The MI5 wants him to identify the Soviet spies who are about to fly to Moscow as members of a British delegation of scientists, offering freedom and a new identity in exchange. But Tibčre knows that he'll never get a taste of that freedom because he'd have to run and hide from the KGB for the rest of his life. Nevertheless, he agrees to cooperate and tries to deal with the consequences. A less known thriller from the Cold War era with a convincing Lino Ventura who portrays a man trying to come to terms with his past. |

Took my grandson to see Lion King because nana and his mum and dad weren't having a bar of it. Jack really enjoyed it. For me...well visually it's stunning and the voice acting is excellent...but somehow the movie as a whole is sterile and disappointing.

The Mark of Zorro (1940)
This is the one you want to watch, despite the age of the film - the Reuben Mamoulian version. Tyrone Power plays a Californian Robin Hood seeking to restore justice and freedom to people who languish under corrupt and greedy tyranny and lack leadership in order to rebel. Linda Darnell in a very early film role is exquisitely pretty and ingenuous as the naive niece of the corrupt tyrant, who is Maid Marian in this fable. She has a great presence in the film, despite not having a lot to actually do, and her chemistry with Tyrone Power as Don Diego/Zorro is top notch. The film is really good fun and no one tries to make it into anything more than what it is. It does however have messages for our own time about justice and fair play.

Trench 11. A horror story set near the end of WW1. Nothing new, but it tells a claustrophobic and creepy story well on a limited budget. And I never realised American soldiers were issued cocaine as part of their rations.

Tomb Raider. Okay, it's not reinventing the action/adventure movie, but it's a very entertaining start to what hopefully is a future franchise. Vikander is great as the iconic Lara and does a not half bad upper crust accent. An amusing nod to Lara's legendary weaponry and her video game origins too. Only curmudgeons and twelve year old boys obsessed with tit size could fail to enjoy it.
