I think it also includes those in the Commonwealth. Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards for one.

Most people with that background like and respect the American nation and people, without necessarily liking or respecting any specific President. Not everyone who lives here now is descended from people who were present on this land in 1939-45 and what their ancestors experienced of the United States in their previous land might not be as heartwarming.
This is not limited to Great Britain, and is the same in virtually all of modern Europe and elsewhere.

But I do not fault people for having short memories and even shorter attention spans.

That's how we're hard wired. Look at the way Americans have already started to forget the lessons of 9-11?

Relative peace and prosperity allows for the breeding of a certain population of malcontents.

A flying soldier on the 14 juillet parade in Paris:

what you can't get from the pics is that he makes almost as much sound as a fighter jet
Still, impressive.

Default Mercury hit 21 ° C on Sunday, July 14 in Alert, Canada, the most northerly inhabited place on Earth

Quote:
A permanent military base established on the 82nd parallel, used in particular to intercept Russian communications, Alert has been home to a weather station since 1950. There was 21 ° C (70°C) on July 14, 20 ° C (68°C) on July 15: "We never saw that," said Castellan. Tuesday at midday, it was already 17 ° C.

[...]

It is an "absolute record of heat" for this station. Mercury hit 21 ° C on Sunday, July 14 in Alert, Canada, the most northerly inhabited place on Earth, less than 900 km from the North Pole. "This is phenomenal as a statistic, it is an example among hundreds and hundreds of other records set by global warming," said Agence France-Presse (AFP) Armel Castellan, meteorologist from the Canadian Department of the Environment.

Default Iran seizes British tanker in Strait of Hormuz

There will be "serious consequences" if Iran does not release a British-flagged tanker seized in the Gulf, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt has said.

The Stena Impero's owners say they have been unable to contact their vessel, which had 23 personnel on board and was "heading north towards Iran".

It was surrounded by four vessels and a helicopter, Mr Hunt said.

A second British-owned Liberian-flagged tanker was boarded by armed guards but is now free to continue its journey.

The Mesdar's Glasgow-based operator Norbulk Shipping UK said communication had been re-established with the vessel after it was boarded by armed guards at around 17:30 BST on Friday and its crew was "safe and well".

There were 25 personnel on board the Mesdar when it was surrounded by 10 speedboats, Mr Hunt said.

The government's emergency committee, Cobra, met in Whitehall twice on Friday to discuss the incident.

A spokeswoman told the BBC the government is "deeply concerned about Iran's unacceptable actions", saying they "represent a clear challenge to international freedom of navigation".

"We have advised UK shipping to stay out of the area for an interim period," the spokeswoman added.

Mr Hunt said the seizures were "completely unacceptable" and "freedom of navigation must be maintained".

"We are absolutely clear that if this situation is not resolved quickly there will be serious consequences," he said.

"We are not looking at military options. We are looking at a diplomatic way to resolve this situation but we are very clear that it must be resolved."

Angry No water for an entire city

To the incompetent wanker who managed to drill a six inch hole in my city's main waterline, there are a crowd of people who'd like to snap your feckin head off. Over 220,000 people either without water or water they could not drink. Every restaurant in the city shut down. Hotels having to relocate all of their guests outside the county because none of the toilets would flush.
The loss of revenue must be immense.
Not to mention some of the air conditioning systems failing because there was no water to cool the coils.
In Florida.
In feckin July.

It's damn hot up here too. Got to 93 Fahrenheit, and the humidity is something like 80%. Stepping outside at 1PM was like stepping into a sauna.

And I just noticed on this first truly brutal day that the new window AC unit I got to cool the upstairs is not putting out as much cold as the old one did, even though it has the same specs.

The room it's in is tolerable, but in this room where I am on the computer it's 89 degrees. The old one did better than that.

What if August is a long succession of 90 degree days?

I'm noticing that it is the 50th Anniversary of the Moon landing. In honor of that, something I wrote some years ago.

We once performed miracles
And dreamt of better days
When we rode the flame.

We flew above the sky and walked on the moon
And never forgot how dangerous it is
To ride the flame.

But now miracles are everyday
And there is no mention in the papers
Of when we next will ride the flame.

Their star pictures are out of focus
And their TVs don't have enough channels
So to fix them we ride the flame.

We give them pictures of the edge of the universe
And dream of Mars, Saturn, and the stars
Each time we ride the flame.

Yet they tell us there is no money
(Never mind it will pay for itself,
and soon pay their salaries)
For us to ride the flame.

We must spend it all today they say
Cause there will be no tomorrow
In which to ride the flame.

They do not hear us say
We will build you a tomorrow
Because today, we ride the flame.

The first time I worked with a computer was at the Fermi Institute in Chicago in 1968. Because of the delicate electronics the computers were designed to shut down if the air temperature exceeded 70 degrees. Therefore, the computer room was the first to get air conditioning. Why did computers ever give up their delicacy?
