Malware Extension in Chrome - Solution
Hope this helps someone
A Malware extension hijacked my Chrome browser in WINDOWS As a result, Chrome starts at an unwanted web page, which spawns other undesired tabs. When I try to open "Settings" or "Extensions" in order to remove the extension, a different Tab is opened instead. Obviously, the malware extension protects itself, as if I can access the Extensions menu, I can remove it easily All the posts I found in the Internet forums assume that you should be able to access "Settings" or "Extensions", but some Malware Software can prevent you for doing so ***** First, you must try "Chrome Cleanup Tool". If it doesn't work, try the explanation below ***** I solved the problem as follows: (some of the steps could be redundant) 1- Close Chrome browser 2- Open Chrome command line: a- open command line / DOS tool (type cmd in Cortana/Execute) b- move to Chrome folder, typically: "cd C:\Program Files (x86)"\Google\Chrome\Application c- type: chrome google.com --disable-plugins --disable-javascript 3- Chrome should open with a single tab 4- In Chrome's address box type: chrome://extensions/disable 5- That should override the redirection that the Malware Extension tries to apply. The way it works...? I am not sure 6- So, the normal Extensions tab should be accessible now. Among the listed Extensions, try to identify the Malware one and remove it 7- If you are not sure about which one to remove, disable all the suspicious ones. You can selectively enable them later until you find the nasty one 8- Now, you can access Settings and change the StartUp page(s) to your favourite ones That should work, until those bastards find another way to screw our computers. Always remember to be aware and never install suspicious extensions. |
