Oddly enough, that's exactly why Sarah Bernhardt wore long gloves so much (and in fact popularized the so-called mousquetaire style, what's usually called the "opera glove" today, in the late 19th century); she thought her arms were painfully thin and wanted an elegant way to cover them up.
