Remember with the Goldsboro song, that was mid-late 60s and compared to the 40s or before, the song was a hit; I was a kid but remember how big it was. Like history, when we don't adjust to the change it decades, it looks like a sappy song (it was, but had merit back then NOT now). That reflection on how time affects things is huge; for example, students today are shocked the Founding Fathers had slaves, but that economic engine was so accepted that we fought a war over it with over 700k killed. Only one Founding Father-George Mason, predicted a major calamity and he did almost 75 years before the war started. So, as with music, one has to look at the "time" element and adjust. Without a time machine, it is difficult to appraise or diminish properly.

Back in the 60's those of us even with the slightest insight of what good music was, realised that this offering was bloody awful! Yes it was a 'hit', added some credence to the expression 'shit can be a hit', on that basis this song was a bucket of dior*/dyer*/diher*....(liquid shit). Plenty of good rock music to listen to from the 60's instead of this garbage! *......(can't spell diarrhoea). |

"In My Life" by the Beatles... but only because my wife says she wants it played at her memorial service many, many years from now. It is a pretty song, but damn, picture yourself sitting in the church as the widowed husband and hearing a song where your wife is reminiscing about all her lovers before you! Going to have to have a little chat with the missus... or die first.

I was at a graduation ceremony and the student speakers blended that Beatles song with their speech-it was stunning with words and music paused and started.
