Hehe, stupid me. Yesterday I was hunting for 20 and 30year articles. I browsed what I have of 87,88 and 97,98 mags, completely forgotten that they consider themselves as started in 1966. (or #blush# which is the emicon I need now... )

Thanks to Fannatic I have been able to easily find more editorial text. Most of the stuff from Blue Climax Favorite Models (no 51-59), should (and may already be) placed in the thread of the model in question.

I however choose, in this thread, to publish this John Holmes piece from Blue Climax 53, posted by the great Al Gebra.

The reason is simple.
The editorial text explains why the John Holmes picture-stories are so short. They are only shot for box-cover use. I (and maybe others) claim elsewhere in this thread (and forum) that the reason why some films are not published as photo-stories, and vica versa is for this reason. During filming photos usually were taken for publicity-material only. And Photo-shoots where shot as photo-shoots. Another explanation why CeeCee stands out, maybe? They did everything properly, rarely making short-cuts for profit....

When that is said, if there is one pornstar I don't care much for, it is John Holmes. I might have understood why he was so 'great' if I were older in the 70's, but now.... He looks like a slimeball who hardly get fully erect. If the story in this text is true (he had ladies at the hotel in addition to the shooting on daytime) it only spells cocaine to me. Lots of it. Well, well. If any of you guys are a fan, no offense. It's just my opinion.

Rodox - Portrait of Denmark's biggest porn kings - the Theander brothers

Denmark's largest adult entertainment company Rodox has had a success which is guaranteed never to be surpassed by others in this industry.

It all began in 1966 when the Theander brothers acquired an antiquarian bookstore in Vestergade in Copenhagen. "Antikvariatet" can be seen in Gabriel Axel's film "Det kære legetøj" from 1968, in which both brothers also appear.

However "Rådhusantikvariatet" was close to City Hall, which was not good for business. In common with most other booksellers they sold erotic books and magazines such as "Variety" with pictures of topless girls which kept within the limits allowed for obscene material.

Peter Theander (born 1941) and Jens Theander (born 1944) decided to go into the erotic industry to give a little more boost to their business.

In London production had started of porn movies on 8 mm cine film - previously all films were 16 mm - but the smaller size made the movies cheaper and it was also the format used to film summer holidays and children's upbringing, so there were some machines in homes.

In 1967, they imported six English Climax films, with a running time of approximately 8-9 minutes, in black & white and silent, since there was no sound on 8 mm film at that time.

I have a large collection of these British films from the 60s, and it is very fine porn, usually with a little funny story and filmed by real film-makers who know the rules for making a movie with "stop" [?], etc.

The films were kept under the counter in the store and sold to known customers. These little films cost then about 400 kroner so even if it was cheaper than 16 mm film it was still a limited audience who were able to watch porn in the living room.

These films were a huge success and the brothers could see that it was the way to make money. When two years later parliament abolished [?] Section 234 of the Penal Code they could begin to produce films and outside there was a big world hungry for more porn.

Sex tourists came in large numbers to Copenhagen including many Englishmen who, curiously enough, either bought or watched English porn in small porn cinemas that sprang up like mushrooms.

The Theander brothers lived on Rodosvej, a small side road off Amagerbrogade in Amager. Down in the basement they created a small photo and movie studio. Here Danish porn production was born and would in a few years become known all over the world.

They were co-organizers of the world's first sex fair which took place in autumn 1969 in KB Hall. It was a huge success and several thousand people had to queue for entry to the event due to lack of space. The rights to film the show had been sold to the U.S. porn pioneer Alex de Renzy, but I do not know if there was ever a film released about the fair. I have not seen it.

They formed the company RODOX after Rodosvej and it was the parent company for the entire group which was built in the following years. Jens was the outgoing and unpretentious person representing the company in public regularly in newspaper and TV interviews. Peter Theander was the noble and well-dressed businessman who controlled sales and accounts.

Money poured into the company and to avoid the tax authorities taking the lion's share they joined "Glistrups Skattecirkus" ("Glistrup's Tax Circus") like many other companies at the time. But when the earth began to burn [?] during Glistrup, they pulled out and paid tax in the normal way.

They did everything to continuously improve the quality of films and magazines and the focus was to make everything themselves. It meant that they invested a lot of revenue for the purchase of printing machines and film laboratory equipment.

The company quickly grew out of the home on Rodosvej and they moved to a larger villa on Kastrupvej. Candy Film production was formed by Jens Theander as director and a modern studio was furnished in Ny Adelgade near Kongens Nytorv ("King's New Square").

In addition to their own production they bought film rights from the USA, England and France. Of imports in particular the first movie with John Holmes, Expo Film No. 51, sold over 50,000 copies. In 1976 they invited John Holmes to Denmark, where he starred in several films.

In the mid 70's, Candy Film was the world's largest producer of 8 mm film. Rodox Color Teknik copied 4000 films daily. The villa on Kastrupvej was now too small and a large new office building was under construction at Strandlodsvej.

The End

In 1975 Rodox Group was running in top gear.
Completely new premises are ready for occupation.

While the administration had offices in a villa on Kastrupvej in Amager, construction of a large new headquarters at Strandlodsvej, also in Amager, was in full swing. In 1975 they were ready for occupation. Candy Film with Jens Theander as director had also furnished a large modern studio at No. 6 Baldersgade in Nørrebro.

The company ran at full speed and claimed to be Europe's biggest porn producer. It certainly was that and maybe it was also an understatement. I could well imagine that the company was the world's largest. There have never been credible statistics available for the porn industry, therefore one might exaggerate a little and indeed there were many who did.

In addition to its own production, many titles were imported from the USA and a great seller was John Holmes. In 1976, Holmes was invited to Denmark, where at the Baldersgade studio he recorded a number of movies with pretty Danish models.

The first films that Candy produced were short 3-minute films mostly in black & white and of course without sound. Several of these films had group sex scenes with about 8 people. It seems incredible to be able to produce a movie in 3 minutes with that number of models, but it was the hippy and "make love not war" era so there was plenty of model material.

Already around 1970-71 the typical porn film was in colour and had a running time of just under 10 minutes (what is known in film parlance as a single-reel). It was Candy who created the template for making a porn film used today, namely intercourse situations with the completion and ejaculation on the girl's face. It was not in the hundreds of old movies from before 1970 that I have seen.

In 1975 a large part of the films, however, were 100 metres long, corresponding to a playing time of about 15 minutes and it was the length that remained throughout the period with cine film. Now the films were also available with sound. Candy Film recorded them still as silent films but they were dubbed with soundtracks in German, English and French.

At the beginning of 80's, French and American films began to be produced on video with direct sound from the outset and this started to cause problems for Rodox. A number of movies in the marketplace were shot on 35 mm film with a running time of about 60 minutes and produced on a relatively large budget. Carlton Cinema in Vesterbrograde in Copenhagen was now a pure porn movie showing these big expensive French films. The market for short cine films was coming to an end.

It was the beginning of the end for Candy Film. Peter Theander thought that he could not find models here in Denmark who could carry an entire feature film and even a dialogue in English, so he would in future rely solely on foreign imported movies. Candy closed in 1986 and Jens Theander left the company, probably as a very rich man and the studios were sold to Minerva Film.

Peter Theander continued the company until 2001 with the release of foreign titles and reissues of old Danish titles on video. When Jens Theander left the company, it was also the end of publicity about the company. Peter Theander did not want to give interviews to the press, but from a foreign hand I know that he now spends time cultivating his interest in opera and his fine wine collection. A fine end to a distinguished business career no other Danish porn producer would be able to match.

Can I just say a HUGE thank you to all the people who have posted in this thread. You have done some genuinely scholarly research painstakingly digging out these precious titbits of information about this wonderful company. I for one am hugely grateful.

I visited the old Strandlodsvej headquarters on a recent trip to Copenhagen as a kind of pilgrimage to a "sacred site" of this once great firm. It was amazing to think of what used to go on inside that unremarkable 70s office block.

Let us hope that as attitudes to porn become more sensible and the subject becomes more "open" that some more detailed research can be conducted into the miracle these brothers brought about.

In the meantime, I salute you all and will now go an thank every single post!

I found the video in a shop here in Denmark but as you know the title is only on VHS and i don’t have one of those.

As of 4/1-2013 there should be stock of "Det kære legetøj".
