This is a very gritty US special forces/FBI operation against Mexican drug cartel members, often taking you into really sinister territory. If you've seen the US version of The Bridge TV series, you'll like this, as it's a step up.

Emily Blunt works for the FBI and is recruited to a special ops unit and their first mission is to cross the border to recover a suspect held in a Mexican jail. The story progresses to the team raiding under-border tunnels, corruption and a vendetta.

There's nothing really complicated about the theme for this movie, but it has a pretty good ongoing feel of tension. I personally liked all this a lot, having been across the border some years ago and finding the whole trip very uneasy.

I'm not going to say that Sicario will be everyone's bag, but the film really has a lot to say about the future of US relations with Mexico and the very serious problem they have right on their own doorstep.

For me, 9/10 and an excellent couple of hours viewing.

Apparently, there is a sequel in production.
Remembering your review spotted the DVD in a charity shop this morning so took the bait and parted with my hard earned £1.

I can only say a thoroughly enjoyable film a very pleasant two hours viewing.

Thank You.

Ghoulies 2

IMDB
YouTube Trailer

The Ghoulies have been captured by a priest who intends to exterminate them, but they manage to escape to a low-rent carnival. There they take up residence in Satan's Den, a foundering, old-fashioned haunted house. The presence of the ghoulies at first gives business a much-needed boost ... until the slimy little buggers start dining on the patrons.

Ghoulies was by no means a great film but it was kinda fun to watch, the so-bad-it's-good fun vibe. Unfortunately, the sequel doesn't follow the same path. Albert Band's movie is too slow-paced and most of all too serious, which does not match with the silly creatures. The Ghoulies are trying to kill people in ways that are supposed to make people laugh but The body count is not very high and the scenes are repeating themselves. Someone enters the Haunted House from the carnival and gets killed or is tortured in some gooey fashions but survives. The same all over again.
The characters are unidimensional, monsters bait at best. The SFX are better than those from the 1st one though. Some nice 80s poetic stop motion moments and real on-set creatures instead of ugly CGIs.
But many things are missing. Even if the movie's gorier than Ghoulies, Ghoulies 2 was supposed to have some kind of madness, regarding the themes and even the location, a carnival. But it doesn't. The film's really too straight and never manages to find its way between seriousness and silliness.

Whores' Glory

The hookers aren’t happy in “Whores’ Glory.’’ Austrian documentarian Michael Glawogger takes his cameras to three red-light districts around the world, and finds life is miserable for the women who work in the world’s oldest profession — and for the men who pay cash for sex.
In Bangkok, the hookers punch in on a time clock before going into glass booths to wait for johns to choose them for what a pimp calls an “all-inclusive session.’’
In Faridpur, Bangladesh — the most depressing of the three places visited by Glawogger — the prostitutes, many still in their teens, work in a rundown brothel and vie (sometimes violently) for customers. When she’s asked for oral sex, one woman says, she tells customers that “Allah didn’t make my mouth for that purpose.’’
And in the area known as the Zone in the Mexican border town of Reynosa, the women — many long past their prime — wait in the doorways of small rooms in a rundown motel.
I found the documentary really good and thought provoking ..

Get Out (2017)

Trailer

The African-American photographer Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) is about to meet the affluent family of his white girlfriend Rose Armitage (Allison Williams). Her parents, the neurosurgeon Dean (Bradley Whitford) and hypnotherapist Missy (Catherine Keener) begin to praise black people but in a very odd and exaggerated way. But Chris is disturbed by the fact that they still employ two black servants, Walter (Marcus Henderson) and Georgina (Betty Gabriel), who act strangely. Soon a bunch of rich white people arrive at the Armitage's annual party, making similar remarks and complimenting Chris for his physique. As the situation keeps getting weirder, Chris begins to realize that he's trapped and about to fall victim to a horrifying plan.

Is this really supposed to be a horror film? It was more funny than scary. And the "evil plan" was rather silly and hardly original. If anything, I enjoyed the humor. There were some funny scenes like Chris' TSA agent friend Rod explaining to three black cops that his friend is missing and that a bunch of rich white people kidnap blacks to turn them into sex slaves. The cops burst in laughter. Overall a decent flick but if you expect a horror film, keep looking somewhere else.

In Cold Blood (1967)

Trailer

Perry Smith (Robert Blake) and Richard "Dick" Hickock (Scott Wilson), ex-cons on parole, get together to carry out a robbery based on information Hickock received from a former cell mate about $10.000 locked in a safe in the home of the Clutters, a farming family from Holcomb, Kansas. But there is no safe and the robbery results in the murder of the entire family in order to leave no witnesses. All Hickock and Smith get away with are $43 and they eventually end up fleeing to Mexico. With no money and no future there, the men decide to return to the US and are arrested in Las Vegas for breaking their paroles and auto theft. Meanwhile a grand investigation is taking place out of Topeka, Kansas, led by special agent Alvin Dewey (John Forsythe). Hickock is ratted out by his former cell mate for a reward of $1.000 which brings him and Smith on the top of Dewey's list of suspects.

Once in a while a man can say that he's seen a really good film. In Cold Blood is one such film. The story is based on Truman Capote's best-known book of the same name and is not a work of fiction. The events depicted in Capote's novel really happened in November and December 1959. I don't know if the book is really that worth reading but Richard Brooks' screen adaptation could easily pass as one of the greatest American films of the 1960s. A dark masterpiece that lets you inside the head of Perry Smith, following his downward spiral to its tragic conclusion.

Scorched Earth

IMDB
YouTube Trailer

The planet has suffered an environmental collapse; the air became dangerous to breathe, the water became toxic, and billions of people died. Generations later, mankind has finally re-established a rudimentary society, in an attempt to pick up the pieces that continue to blister in the sun.
Attica Gage is a bounty hunter with a chance at the bounty of a lifetime: to bring down the ruthless outlaw, Elijah Jackson. Gage infiltrates Jackson's gang, and everything is going to plan until she meets a slave girl who reminds her of her dead sister. With her loyalty to only herself now tested, Gage learns that there might be more to life than just survival.

I'm always ready for a post-apocalyptic B-movie, especially if the gorgeous and badass Gina Carano plays the main character. And Scorched Earth is a very curious one. First, it was directed by Peter Howitt whose filmography as a director and even an actor doesn't rely on Mad Max-Like small budgets. And it also features the great John Hannah from Four Weddings & One Funeral, The mummy and other good flicks.
In Scorched Earth, you have everything the genre uses: customized rusty cars, a villain who's turning his prisoners into slaves, a fierce heroine...some mutants added could have been great but they won't make an appearance. Too bad!
So is that good? Unfortunately, not really. There are 2 main problems in this: money and a good pace. Visually, it's alright. We're not watching Mad Max Fury Road but the desolated towns and the dirty weather do the job. The movie clearly looks like a Western Crepuscular. Gina Carano is as you can easily imagine her: hot and badass. The girl's great! No doubt about this! Hannah is cool as a grumpy and lazy sidekick, so is Ryan Robbins as a charismatic bad guy.
But the lack of a shapely budget curbs the action's enthousiasm. Howitt and his team can't afford valuable stunts, astonishing explosion, lots of extras and strong gunfights. Gina does the best she can but she's sometimes not very helped by a director whose skills do not include a nice filming of action or fight sequences. And it's also too slows.
The movie starts on a good note but as soon as our main character Attica arrives at the villain's lair impersonating a dead bounty hunter she killed earlier, Scorched Earth doesn't manage to capitvate its audience. Not enough variations in the story, nothing much happens...too many talking scenes where the protagonists are judging themselves and playing at "who's got the biggest one"...then 20mn around the ending, the film wake up a little and Gina's back in action!
So Scorched Earth won't leave a mark in movie history and as the result of this, the first thing that appears is that Gina Carrano deserves better roles in better movies. She's truly the main attraction here. The film itself is watchable and has some nice moments, still it's always cool to watch a post-apocalyptic flick. But don't hope to be astonished by this.

The Ballerina (2017)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3517984/

A superbly atmospheric ghost story about loss and redemption, it doesn't go in for big shock effects it just relies on the strength of the story and great acting by the main adult leads. Yes the first hour or so does drag a little and the budget limitations do make a difference and those odd green lights are just annoying but overall it was a decent attempt.
