There has been thousands of live concerts recorded and released, often found them too be the best and most honest work by the artist, so, In your opinions, what are the best ones...........

A Black and White Night
Roy Orbison

It's simple, Roy performing his classics too a small audience at the Coconut Grove and surrounded by a great line up of other performers, These included Bruce Springsteen (who once said he wished he could write like Bob Dylan and sing like Roy Orbison), T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, K.D. Lang, and Bonnie Raitt.

Just basic rock music performed without glitz, fireworks and other bullshit. How Roy could perform without hardly moving and remain cool beats me.

Tough choice, but this album rocks SO hard, i get a real energy-boost every time i play it. Recorded in 1964 with a great backing from brits The Nashville Teens to a dedicatded audience of rockers. Jerry was on a decline after the scandals( which you can read about somewhwere else) , he played mostly small venues , drank hard and got chubby but when he entered the stage he was a human hurricane! I have three favs (only remember three in this moment)

My first is the BJH Live.



I have the LP, but don't remember where it was recorded.

The second is Fleetwood Mac Live in Boston



(I have it downloaded in MP3)

And the third (but not the last) is "Les Trois Mousquetaires"

I have three favorite live albums and one DVD.

I guess my all time favorite live album would have to be KISS Alive I.



It was the first time that you were able to hear how really raw the band sounded live. It set the stage for how much more powerful the albums after like Destroyer and Love gun would sound.

My second favorite would be Metallica: Live Shit Binge & Purge.



This was recorded right after the huge success of the Black Album and before "redirection" that the band took when Load and ReLoad came out. It is 3 CD's long so it's a lot of material. Not only does it cover most of the classic Metallica stuff like Master Of Puppets, One, and Enter Sandman, there are also some things that you don't get to hear live often like their covers of Last Caress and Stone Cold Crazy.

My third pick is Judas Priest: Unleashed In The East.



This was recorded on their tour of Japan in 1979 so this was right before the release of British Steel which really launched the band. This is where I first heard their covers of Joan Baez's song Diamonds & Rust and Peter Green's Green Manalishi. As with KISS Alive I, Unleashed In The East showed how powerful Judas Priest actually sounded live. All their albums up until then sounded a little on the soft side. The live versions of Sinner, The Ripper, and The Tyrant sounded much more powerful than their album versions. The best song on the album to me is Victim Of Changes.

One of my favorite live DVD's is Megadeth: Rude Awakening.



Megadeth has always been a favorite of mine because not only is the music great, but they are an incredibly tight band on stage. Motley Crue is one of the worst live acts in my opinion because Vince Neil seems to sing only about every other third or fourth word of a song. Dave Mustaine is exactly the opposite. You always know where he is in a song.

I actually have a Top Ten and Top Thirty. I'll post those as well once we start to see what's on everyone's list.

I know there a lots of folks who enjoy live performances that mimic--to the note--the recorded material. I appreciate live performances for their spontaneity; the rough spots that prove that the slick studio takes were based on guys jamming on a good riff; finally, the improvisation that is so key to excellent rock music is just impossible and impractical to present in a studio--that's why they play on stage.

Thin Lizzy for me were the best the best rock band of the 70's and 80's and their album
Live And Dangerous will always be my favorite.
A double album recorded in 1977 and released in 78 it was recorded at two venues,
the Hammersmith Odeon London and the Seneca College Fieldhouse Toronto. It was part
of the Bad Reputation tour and included great Lizzy tracks like, Jailbreak, Warriors, Suicide and Sha-La-La with Brian Downey's excellent drum solo.
For me the number one live album and definitely the number one band.

CD = The Who - Live at Leeds.
(Although i think i prefer the original vinyl short version) sorry billy

DVD = Jimi Hendrix - the Band of Gypsies.
A lot of this footage was hitherto unknown until the DVD was released.
Painstakingly compiled from various sources, including B&W audience footage, it's a classic document of a great event.

I'm not a huge fan of 'live' albums, they defeat the object for me - leave the live performance for the club/theatre/arena, leave the CD/Vinyl for the production values of the studio.

But several live albums spring to mind that really deliver Live and Dangerous (already mentioned above) is one - but for me the best of the best is Live 75-85. It shows Springsteen at his youthful rise to his mid 80s peak - with 40 tracks, a running time of over three and a half hours, it is about as close to the real 'live' Boss experience you can get.
