Just watched The Crazies remake,Not bad at all.The Crazies in this one are icily psychotic rather than ravening maniacs, the protagonists are also beset by the Army intent on imposing a "Zero Option " solution.

Default Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958)

Probably by accident, they're showing a good film on on UK freeview movie channel Film4.

It belongs to that era when Hollywood wouldn't employ Chinese actors to perform in the parts of Chinese characters if these were at all important parts. Come to mention it, it was distinctly odd to cast Ingrid Bergman to play a working class maidservant called Gladys Aylward, who went to China under her own steam because she was not considered sufficiently well-born by the Missionary Society to be allowed to be a missionary, being both working class and illegitimate. I once listened to an interview on Radio 4 of one of the Chinese orphan children whom Ingrid Bergman's Gladys Aylward escorts to safety across frozen mountains; he was in his fifties by this time and an established actor, but I regret I do not recollect his name. However he commented mordantly but with good humour on the colour bar which still stood in the way of Chinese actors in 1958, mentioning that the producers did allow Burt Kwouk to play Li, the escaped convict who came to Gladys Aylward's aid because she once defused deadly tensions in a prison riot in which he was involved and prevented the authorities from quelling it with lethal force. Kwouk gave a fine performance btw. But chiefly he mentioned that, as it happened, Robert Donat in the last film of his life delivered a really good performance as the Chinese district governor or Mandarin who employs Ingrid Bergman in the poisoned chalice job of Foot Inspector, setting her up to fail, but is won over to feel huge respect for her when against all the odds she succeeds in breaking the harmful tradition od wrapping girls feet so they cannot run or walk freely as adults.

I've seen this film many times; but it is still a good film. I tuned in just in time to catch Donat's very moving final scene, when old and frail, he chairs the last town council meeting of Yang Cheng, already raided and looted by the Japanese invaders, and briefly free again until the proper invasion army arrives to occupy it. He orders the evacuation of the remaining people; the Imperial Japanese Army are extremely brutal occupiers and he doen't want anyone to have to buy what they are selling. Then as his farewell to Gladys Aylward, since he is already ill and will die soon, he orders the recorder to close the books with the entry that he has adopted Christianity as his personal faith as a mark of his respect for the Honourable Foot Inspector. If you watch the whole film you will see that Gladys's scrupulous refusal to preach her faith is a bit of a running joke between them; he knows that she is employing the soft sell rather than the usual missionary hard sell, and he is always too fly to be taken in. But at the very end he has conceded that Gladys lives by her word and her whole conduct of life is witness to the sincerity of what she believes. It's a sad and moving scene, really bitter-sweet. Bergman acts well too, weeping like a child and tacitly admitting, as she knows she will never see him again, that he has been to her like the father she never had. There's much more to like in the film than just this scene, but the film would be worthwhile for this one scene alone.

It`s meant to be based on factual alien abduction cases or something . I`m only watching it for Milla , but god she doesn`t half look rough in this . So rough i`ve realised the woman can`t act. Don`t think i`ve ever noticed that before. Probably due to her beauty in every other film i`ve ever watched her in. But in this one she looks near enough plain , and is acting like she`s bored or drugged, maybe both ?.

The story such as it is involves her husband who died under strange circumstances. She believes it was due to an alien abduction and so in her role as a psychiatrist and hypnotherapy is attempting to unearth the truth. Only she`s doing it while behaving as if she`s half asleep. The words she speaks don`t come out of her mouth in any natural way you might expect a determined widow to speak, instead they slowly slur out . As in " Alllll iiiiiii neeeeeeeeeed tooooooo knnnnnnnnowwww is the truuuuuuth "

But if that wasn`t bad enough the local sheriff suspects her of the death of her hubbie

Although how he came to that conclusion given every bit of evidence points to the exact opposite is a mystery that only he and the script writer know

What`s that you say ?

Sounds almost gripping ?

Maybe

That is maybe it would be if it also wasn`t for the constant interruptions of the main story with reenacted interview sessions with actors portraying people who claim to have been snatched by aliens

It`s crazy !

One minute you`re watching the story , the next we suddenly have the , wait for it , actors name pop up on screen , yes the one who you`re seeing and underneath the name of the person they`re playing.

Like what the F

No wonder it was universally panned and died a death

No idea what it`s about or what it`s like as it`s only been on a few minutes, but so far ma main man Denzil seems to be acting surprised about everything he sees. Although you`d think given the country he`s walking through is a wasteland he`d be used to the death , destruction and desolation. Right now he`s listening to music via an ipod . Yet how he keeps it charged in what i can figure out is a ruined world is something that hasn`t been explained yet .

I`m sure they`ll be plenty of twists in the story , and that it won`t end happily for our hero. But i`m currently drunk enough to put those aside , sign out and sit through it

Maybe he's a bit like me, and was surprised to find that Puddles 11/12/13 was running an hour late. He may not have had the choice to switch back to England Uber Alles, as I had, ho-hum. Have to say though, it looks like a shite film, thus far.

Been a while since I saw one of the last great 90ies movie: Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. This is one of the few movies where I think Johnny Depp was good, besides Gilbert Grape, Dead Man and Donnie Brasco. But Hunter S. Thompson is the man.

I think it's called "suspension of disbelief", GS. I'll tip a few beers and try watching it.

I watched Milk last night. not really my cup of tea (no pun intended), but it's pretty
rare that I'm not impressed with a Sean Penn acting performance. a rather compelling
story based on the life of gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk. like him or not,
Mr. Penn can act! he was good in "All the King's Men" too, which I watched last week.
