There was a scifi novel called, I think, Salt, that used that idea. Unfortunately the inmates took over the prison and hung the guards in cages from the walls to bake alive in the desert sun.

In my idea the guards will not set foot in the Gulag. They will be patrolling in helicopters.

Sounds expensive, compared to the Aussie approach [keeping on topic] of contracting out to poor neighbouring islands. There are other approaches to justice that have much better outcomes and cost far less. Fewer victims, fewer recidivists, reduced violence, etc.

You're talking about some of those people who were later found to be innocent of the crimes for which they were wrongly convicted? Researchers in Illinois found a large number of the people on death row there were either able to be proven innocent of the crime or else there were serious doubts about their convictions. As a result, the state ceased applying the death penalty punishment.

If you lived in America and were super rich, you would probably own stock in the hugely profitable private prison companies and the associated cellphone companies charging monopoly prices for prisoners and their families to talk to each other. Note that prisoners are now being sent far from their families and in person visits harassed and otherwise discouraged.

But these are black and Latino drug offenders and who gives a sh*t about them anyway?

Don't care about the politics of this. True there are always people who are wrongfully imprisoned. If I was super rich I would do all in my power to make sure that only the truly guilty would be thrown into this aussie Gulag. And it would alleviate the crowding of prisons all over America, and keep the super baddies out of our cities. And the natural wildlife of Australia would do it's part to kill many of the prisoners whose lives are of no importance. Murderers, rapists, drug dealers, pedophiles don't deserve life anyway.
