Swedish Erotica
Why haven't they come out with a CD-ROM or something from those photo shoots?
Noel Bloom sold Caballero in 1987. His father had died in I believe 1986 and his mother continued the Swedish Erotica magazine until 1989 when she just closed the business down. Roughly the first 300 magazines were all original and then the magazines after that were reprinted photos, sometimes with a few new photographs added. The magazines were produced seperately from the loops. Originally Noel produced Cinema Classics loops. The stills from these loops were put in Bernie Bloom's sociol porn magazines of SECS Press(1970-1972) and Edusex(1972-1974). Most of these loops contained unknown models. A few of the loops contained John Holmes and some other early porn stars. These were all silent loops. Ed Wood Jr. made some of these early loops. I am told all the original masters for Cinema Classics were destroyed. Your question is why isn't there a behind the scenes of the photo shoots. Swedish Erotica were not photo shoots, but loops that were shot. The photographs for the magazines came from the loops themselves. I think it would be great if Caballero would do a documentary on how Swedish Erotica originated and the people involved, but you have to ask them. Also the people involved did it to make money. They could care less about the history of it. They don't even keep any memorbilia from those days. It isn't like the mainstream movie industry. It is very frustrating trying to track down the people involved and when you find them, they don't remember much of those days. They don't keep old magazines, loops, books, photos, etc. It was just a job to them. They don't even have a master list of loops done or magazines published. So it all basically falls on us collectors. I personally don't collect Swedish Erotica besides the first 20 or so issues. There were also a few issues of pre Swedish Erotica magazines published with some of the same names of later SE titles like Rouge. I collect Bernie Bloom's earlier magazines like Pendulum, Calga, and Gallery Press Publishers. |

Just like there are photo shoots that go on during filming of modern XXX direct to DVD productions, there was someone taking still photos while the filming was going on for those loops. And from my experience collecting the mags and scanning in the photos, there were things shot by the still camera that never appeared in any loop. Different positions, strip teases, posing shots...what I'm trying to say that what you get in the film review mags was not always a 1:1 corresponding reflection of what wound up in the loops. Sometimes they would shoot stills in between changing film rolls, which accounts for the different positions. This is particularly true for films #250 on up. And what did appear in the mags was just a taste. A bunch of photos never saw print. And not because they weren't good enough but because there just wasn't room. I kept finding still shots on boxcovers for the Swedish Erotica Hard series; a series that was just repackaged versions of the old SE loops, that are nowhere to be found in the magazines. Even the old SE loop booklets would contain shots that you couldn't find in the loops. And that's my main point. The pics themselves serve as a kind of bonus section. If you look at a lot of the loops you see a heavy preponderance of "close up" shots of an actors face or body parts. But in the mags you get a heavy preponderance of total body shots. Because I keep seeing these shots, even on modern Caballero DVD case releases, which never appeared in the loops or in the magazines and are totally new in as much as they never appeared elsewhere before, I know they have some of those pic sets still, probably in slide form. It's that library that I and probably others would like to see come out. They're just gathering dust in Caballero's vaults. Some day they could even get tossed out or destroyed. And that would indeed be a shame. |

I'm not a fan of that, because once you've seen one such close-up, you've basically seen 'em all. They could be anyone. I much prefer the full-body shots with all the lingerie etc. My other pet hate in vintage porn from that era (although it blighted CCC loops more than it blighted SE material) is cluttered coffee tables in front of the action, with half-empty Bacardi bottles, glasses, candles and such like getting in the way and generally being a distraction. |
