Your favorite dogs?

I prefer larger smooth coated breeds, but for practical reasons I tend to go for small to medium sized. These practicalities are;

1. Space, as has been mentioned earlier, to keep a big dog you need a large space, which I do not have. They need more exercise too.
2. Poop. I hate picking up after a dog, but if the dog in question is squeezing out turds larger than my own I really don't want to be carrying that home in a bag.
3. Cost. Big dog = more food = more cost. I see dog ownership as a commitment, and I wont take on more than I can handle financially.

If none of the above were an issue, and selective breeding hadn't caused inherent problems, then my favourite breeds to own would be:
Weimaraner (Can be 'scatty', also suffer with separation anxiety)
Dalmation (Prone to deafness)
Doberman, I prefer them with ears unclipped, and tails undocked.

More practical breeds I also like;
Manchester Terriers
Staffordshire Terriers
Beagles

As it is I currently have a Lakeland Terrier;

This is 'Winkle'

After 'Rip Van Winkle' as she likes to sleep. In spite of what you were thinking.

A very brave dog as you can see.

When awake, she enjoys sunbathing whilst keeping an eye on the grounds.

But now she's starting to show her age (10) with a grey muzzle.

At the moment though, she is perfectly healthy, just the way I like it.

I don't have a particular breed that I like more than others although I do have a soft spot for "muttleys" (mongrels).

I don't think that's necessarily true, MemoryHunter. Surely it depends on the type of dog and/or the amount of exercise and work it gets, not on its size

For example, I kept a 90 kg dog in a 140 m2 apartment, and in an 80 m2 apartment for 12 years, and never had a problem. She didn't even need so much space. On the other hand, she had at least 10 km of walking and running every day. She thrived

But intelligent, 'working dogs' are different. Some must be kept outdoors, and if you don't 'work' them, it's a crime against the dog. Many of these unfortunate animals, the most intelligent dogs we have, are kept in cages no bigger than a prison cell for most of their lives. So much for 'needing space'

I actually prefer cats over dogs call me weird or whatever but love them.The dogs i do like are
Wolves(they are of canine breed but i know i should not like to own them but i think they are great looking animals)
Siberian Huskies(could not own them ever since i read they eat cats but they are really great looking dogs)
Alaskan Malamute
German Shepherds
Bordie Collies

• Welsh Springer Spaniel
• English Springer Spaniel

Brought up amongst 'em, but couldn't keep a dog till I retired. Now I've one of each & it's a question of who's more wired to the moon (dogs or owner).....
