The latest updates of Firefox by default now disable "unsigned" add-ons:

Quote:
What is add-on signing?

Mozilla verifies and "signs" add-ons that follow a set of security guidelines. All add-ons hosted on addons.mozilla.org undergo this process in order to be signed. Add-ons hosted on other sites will need to follow the same guidelines in order to be signed by Mozilla.

Add-on signing targets only malware and browser hijacking. It does not control or censor the content that you choose to see.
Developers: To learn more about add-on signing guidelines, see Signing and distributing your add-on and Review Policies at Mozilla Developer Network.

What can I do if Firefox disables an installed, unsigned add-on?

If an installed add-on is disabled because it hasn't been signed, contact the add-on developer or vendor to see if they can offer an updated and signed version of that add-on. You can also ask them to get their add-on signed. Another option is to visit addons.mozilla.org to see if there's a signed version of the add-on you can install.

Override add-on signing (advanced users): You can temporarily override this setting by changing the xpinstall.signatures.required preference to false in the Firefox Configuration Editor (about:config page). Support is not available for any changes made with the Configuration Editor so please do this at your own risk.
I had the problem with UnMHT add-on that got disabled.

type about:config into the URL bar in Firefox

double-click the preference, or right-click and selected "Toggle", to set it to false.

I'm seriously thinking about trying Palemoon instead. Firefox is getting way too complex for my meagre IT knowledge. I particularly dislike the blue 'search by default' bar that appears when you start to type a web address in the latest version.

I have to say that you will probably be very happy with it. Pale Moon is Firefox but just an older version. I can still use all of the security extensions I want, it doesn't have such a heavy footprint as far as memory usage (rig118's problem) and just seems to have few problems.

I just reinstalled Ubuntu on another partition (I'm a Linux novice but need to learn it) and am somewhat dismayed to find Pale Moon on linux is a bit of a pain (can't install it yet).

So give Pale Moon a shot. I think you'll really like it. I know I do.

Just thought I'd mention there's also Firefox-ESR the Extended Support Release. Mozilla kinda hides that one but it used as default in several Linux distros.
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/

And of course Seamonkey is still hanging around. Thought it died last year when they went half the year without any updates. The last time I did any serious testing Seamonkey was actually a little faster and lighter on memory than FF or PM. The big negative is a lot extension authors don't bother supporting Seamonkey anymore.

What's PaleMoon's plan for their browser and extensions once Mozilla goes WebKit? I haven't looked at that project for over year but back then they were kinda riding on Mozilla's coat-tails so to speak. The project was originally built off the ESR release, have they truly forked now?

I'm dreading the upcoming Mozilla changes myself. If they botch it too bad guess I'll learn to live with Opera or take another look at PaleMoon.

40plus have a look at the Classic Theme Restorer add-on.

I use Seamonkey at work, not so much as a browser, but as a WYSIWYG HTML-editor, because it still has the Composer.

Otherwise, I tend to have several browser around, partly as plan B for the odd obnoxious website, but mainly as a backup should my main browser catch malware flu.

Default Palemoon download progress indicator broken...how to fix

For some unknown reason the download progress indicator broke on my copy of Palemoon. Downloads still worked, but status could only be viewed by opening the full view download history window <Show all Downloads> or Tools>Downloads.

Linux Fix: reset Palemoon to default settings. How to: Quit Palemoon and go into Terminal & run:

palemoon -safe-mode

A window will popup with several options....choose reset to default. Upon restart everything worked as before, but home page, cookies, history, image host grabber options, all reset to defaults. Bookmarks were unchanged, but I did export a copy first just to be safe.

Windows or Mac machine:
Holding SHIFT key (Windows) or OPTION key (Mac) while opening Palemoon should allow you to reset defaults in similar manner as Linux.

id-ridden,

Slightly off topic, but if other suggestions don't work, then try this one:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/20334...d-manager.html

This just shows you how to use the old Firefox (Pale Moon) download manager. If you can't get the most recent to work then try the above. Works just fine for me.

I just compared the latest versions (26 and 44) of both browsers, and Pale Moon is using an average of only 15K memory less than the Fox.

Well, thats not very much difference. Do you have the same extensions installed? That would make a difference.

I have a bunch of extensions on both. The lists are not identical, because some FF extensions don't work with Pale Moon. Many are disabled as well.

However, I don't hear the fan pumping air, either.
