Here comes the Kilbeggan
Tonight I'll try this one, the Kilbeggan from Ireland ! 8 Years old. Tasty, sweet in not that hard in mouth. Not the best whiskey on earth but he does the job pretty well with peanuts and olives.

Myself, I've always found that Crown Royal is a bit to subtle for my tastes, but then again, I like spicey foods, smoke a pipe and the occasional cigar, not to mention about 20 cigarettes a day, so my taste in booze is probably along the lines of Quasumido's taste in music: A wild ride on the bells. That being said, if you do enjoy Crown Royal, you may also enjoy some of the other very smooth whiskeys, like Bushmill's single malt Irish whiskey. Irish Whiskey, being triple-distilled, as opposed to only double distilled like Scotch, is considered much smoother and more subtle than Scotch.* Still, like Scotch, there is wide variance. I prefer blended Johhny Walker Black Label to Glenlivet or Glenfiddich single malts, even though it's much cheaper. The Red Label stuff, however, I don't fancy at all. Never tried the Blue or Green Label stuff, though, for obvious reasons. Cognac is also quite subtle and smooth, esp. if you spring for the XO stuff. Again, never tried the Louis the XIV stuff. * In these days of large-scale reflux distillation, double or triple distilled now only refers to the height of the reflux still's tower, I believe. The higher the tower, the more distillation occurs before the final product is collected. ...and then there's aging in charred casks, etc...

I have tried some single malt whiskeys and I find that they taste quite awful. I actually prefer the blended whiskeys. I actually don't want too much taste in a liquor, and when I said the other day that I don't like cocktails I should amend that by saying that I do like the tropical drinks that are served in Hawaii. I spent two weeks in Oahu in 1978 and in 1983 and I really like the sweet, but potent rum cocktails served mostly at Hawaiin restaurants by the beach or in the hotel restaurants in Waikiki, such as Mai Tai, Pina Colada, Blue Hawaii, and this very potent drink called The Volcano: contains light rum, dark rum, 151 proof rum, gin, vodka, grenadine, orange, lemon and pineapple juices. This drink will get you drunk in five minutes. There are also variations in the basic recipe of this and many other Hawaiian drinks. Now for today's drink.
Today's drink is from Germany: Kapuziner Bavarian Hefeweizen. Pours a clear copper color and produces a large creamy, frothy white head that lasts at least ten minutes. Alcohol content is 5.4%. Typical banana and clove taste of wheat beers, but also has some taste of orange peel. No hop bitterness at all. Very smooth going down, and only light carbonation. Exceptional overall! Don't let the cigar-smoking crowd with no taste buds tell you how to drink. Er, I mean listen to me, not them. Still, Single malt or single batch is only the definer of purity, not taste, and your taste is what counts. I had a roomy a few months back who bought this $200.00 or so a bottle of single-batch Scotch, and it was great, smooth and easy to drink straight, better, IMHO than Johnny Walker Black Label blended Scotch, unlike that Glenlivet or Glenfiddich crapola, sadly my alcohol-riddled brain cannot remember the name of it, but at $200/bottle, it didn't seem important, at the time. Again, if you like Crown Royal, then there exists an Irish Whiskey you will also like, in all likelihood.
