Not really, now that we are aware the issue with the form by which thread titles have been modified, as shown in Jenny's memo about it from last year. Presumably if the title of that thread were modified by the proper manner it would no longer turn up in the results of a title-only search for "melissa".

No, and you're guessing because you don't know what data is in what data fields, or what data fields the search engine is examining. It might not be doing what you think it is

Besides, it's been explained often enough by Jenny that the search engine is quirky. If you accept one piece of her wisdom you should accept this too

An experiment may prove interesting. If you amend the thread title as per Jenny's memo, then we can see if it's still returned by a "melissa" search. /shrug/ If it doesn't then issue solved. If it does then something else is going on. Such an update may take a short while to propagate across vef's array of servers.

I didn't say Jenny's memo explained all the search tool's behaviour--it does not--but it does explain plenty based upon the experimental trials where mods. have amended some threads. There were probably a lot of thread titles that were amended in the way she's described before mods. became aware of its anomalous implications last year.

The search engine is examining an index in the mySql back-end to the vBulletin package/software. Database indices are separate from the fields that they index. It is poor programming in vBulletin that gives mods. the ability to edit thread titles in such a way that can generate such anomalies--i.e. updates to the data in the field (thread title) are not correspondingly propagated across to the database's index on that field. This issue may have been recognised and resolved in a later version of vBulletin. /shrug/

Computers are generally pretty consistent in their behaviour. It's the humans, and their sometimes ill-conceived or erroneous software, that can be anomalous.

Yes, I did it before I wrote my reply above, actually. The thread log has a date/time stamp for when I changed it. And when I tested it, it produced the same result, which means a) it's searching in data fields in addition to the one for the current title, or b) when titles are changed, they aren't overwritten in all cases -- this might sound strange, but I've seen it numerous times in cases where posts are edited and the old text is still there but not displayed. I can tell you about it in a PM, if you want.... or c) there is a different reason

Very likely. But sophisticated members like you have always known that many search-approaches may be needed before a good result is found. Particularly when it is known that results can be unpredictable, whether data is entered in a certain way or not. That was the point about vBulletin-quirkiness in Jenny's post
