L'humanité (1999)
Trailer In French Flanders, a girl is raped and murdered on her way home from school. The case is entrusted to Inspector Pharaon de Winter (Emmanuel Schotté), a quiet and introverted man who lost his wife and child in an accident. His only two friends are his neighbor Domino (Séverine Caneele) and her boyfriend Joseph (Philippe Tullier) whom Pharaon considers rude and stupid. Since the local police are understaffed, the investigation moves slowly until the cops from Lille taker over. Bruno Dumont's L'humanité is not a crime thriller in the strict sense. Perhaps not even in any sense at all. It's a film about loneliness, empathy, loss and, like the title suggests, humanity. |

I watched "1944" (2015) - an Estonian film regarding WWII. The film explains that Estonian was taken over by the Russians in 1940. Some Estonians were conscripted into the Red Army. When the German overran Estonia in 1941, some became members of the German Armed forces. The film starts off with the protagonist being a Waffen SS Estonian who mourns the fact that his family save for one was sent to Siberia during the earlier Red Army occupation. Much of his dialogue is regarding a letter he is writing to the remaining family member.
The Estonians are not thrilled to be fighting for Hitler, but many hate the Russians. The bulk of the battle scenes can be found on YouTube. Around an hour into the film, as the protagonist attempts to stay in Estonia as the Germans are being kicked out, he is abruptly killed by a man in a Russian uniform. The film now centers on this Estonian in the Red Army. He has taken a letter from the pocket of the protagonist and takes it to the addressee who turns out to be the sister. The new protagonist learns that his father is the one who sent the earlier protagonist's family to Siberia. Near the end of the film, his unit captures six 16 year old Estonians in German uniforms who are trying to get home. The political officer orders him to shoot them and he refuses. He gets shot for his troubles. Not the end of the film, but basically this film taught me that it sucks to be in a small country between two warring super powers. I guess the end images of his sister living with some of the refugees seen earlier in the film is suppose to show that life goes on, but I just thought of the two basically good men who died because they lived between warring super powers. Authentic looking war scenes, depressing story. 3 of 5 from me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1944_(film) |

Persona (1966)
Trailer Elisabet Vogler (Liv Ullmann), a stage actress, has suddenly stopped talking and moving. But her doctors are convinced that this is the result of her own decision and not physical or mental illness. The nurse Alma (Bibi Andersson) is assigned to taking care of Elisabet and as time passes, the two appear to grow fond of each other. Elisabet's doctor believes that she may recover more quickly in a cottage by the sea and sends her there with Alma. The nurse opens up to Elisabet, revealing a lot of personal stuff like getting pregnant from an orgy. One day when Alma drives to town to mail their letters, she notices that Elisabet's is not sealed and discovers that Elisabet mentioned everything Alma had told her about herself. Feeling used and betrayed, Alma attacks Elisabet but the personalities of both women have already become too merged. Watching Ingmar Bergman's Persona makes you realize than only few film directors came close to something that might be considered perfection. Even if there was no dialogue, the sheer power of the images tells the story in its own way. Bergman was certainly one of cinema's greatest poets. |

All That Jazz (1979)
Trailer Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is a Broadway director and choreographer working on his latest musical while editing a Hollywood film at the same time. A heavy smoker and workaholic, Gideon draws his energy from a daily dose of Vivaldi, Visine, Alka-Seltzer, Dexedrine and sex. His girlfriend Katie (Ann Reinking), to whom he is unfaithful, ex-wife Audrey (Leland Palmer) and daughter Michelle (Erzsébet Földi) try to make him start a more balanced lifestyle but it's already too late as Joe's health worsens rapidly. Meanwhile, he constantly finds himself in a state of hallucination, flirting with an angel of death called Angelique (Jessica Lange). Roy Scheider stars in a rather unusual role and he's brilliant! The character of Joe Gideon is partially based on the life of Bob Fosse, the director of this picture. I'm not into films that pass as musicals but this one is really worth watching, mainly due to the amazing performance of a man who was mainly known for his tough guy roles. |
