Oscars - Wrap Up

Well, Oscar got to go home with some (congrats Mr. McConaughey) and others were left out (Sorry, Leo. Better luck next time) and thus ends the awards season for works made in 2013.

In my opinion there were no big surprises in who won and my predictions were nearly spot on. 20 out of 24 or a 83.3% accuracy rate. I nailed all the major categories and all the music/tech awards, but where I stumbled was with the trophies for Animated Short, Documentary Feature, Live Action Short, & Foreign Language. Oh well, not a big deal because my accuracy was the highest I've had in quite a while.

As for the show itself (and yes I stayed up and watched every minute of it) was not bad. There were good moments (Ellen's selfie that crashed Twitter for a short time) and not so good moments (John Travolta mispronouncing Idina Menzel's name). But overall it was good show and Ellen DeGeneres did well as host again (the pizza gag was brilliant) and should be given serious consideration for hosting next year.

I do have one beef with the show and that's the way the nominees for the Best Song category were handled. It seemed to me (and I could be wrong about this) that Idina Menzel's performance of "Let It Go" was given short shift by the producers as the entire middle part of the song was dropped. I know this because I have the movie soundtrack and have seen the song clip on YouTube a few times.

I don't know if this was done on purpose because they were pressed for time (the performance didn't air until 11:15 pm east coast time) or it was for other, undetermined reasons. In any case, the other performances were given their full allotted time and to the best of my knowledge, nothing was omitted.

We may never know the truth on this issue and that's too bad because a few "die hard" fans of the song (and the film) have picked up on this and have been quite vocal across social media.

And if the producers of the Oscar telecast ever read things like this (though I doubt they would here) my suggested fix would be to have all the Best Song performances be done as a whole group (each artist, each song) and give them their allotted time. Cut out a montage or two if need be. Also, having the orchestra in the theater instead of in another studio many blocks away would help with pacing for the singers.

So, until next year ....

43m people watched this year's OSCARs-television executives in Britain would kill for figures like that-our largest audiences seem to consist of Christmas episodes of soaps, specials and one-offs like World Cup matches or New Year celebrations in London. If the BAFTAs hit more than 8m they've done well. Liked the idea of the host Ellen DeGeneres(or Degenerate as I call her) sending out for pizza midway through-nice touch-saw the pictures in the paper this morning.

Dammit I still can`t believe Sammie L Jackson didn't win

In the "Best loud swearing voice " category

For his moving part in the 3D box office flop Moving Parts. The moving tale of a removal man who regains his sight and realises he`s black, then regains his mojo and realises he`s gay, then crashes his van, cripples himself, turns to drink, drugs and gambling to cope but ultimately finds salvation and love in the stunted short warm arms of a turrets syndrome suffering bio polar dwarf (Majestically portrayed by Denial Dey Lewis). Who works part time in Star Bucks , half time in McDonalds and is addicted to drinking Pepsi while making sure the logo is at all times direct to camera.

Exactly

In other words

Dem Oscars be fixed I`tell`ee

43 million people watching a programme in the USA? Thats not a particuarly high figure, the population of the USA is approx 300 million, ours is 60 million.

Interestingly, the cartoon Room on the Broom, oneof the Oscar-nominated animations last week, has won at the British Animations Award(not BAFTA) for best cartoon beating the likes of The Snowman and the Snowdog(CH4).

Yup it's back tonight, the annual start of the Luvviefest(which also includes the Oscars at the end of the month) I wonder who will win tonight? Incidentally the OED(Oxford English Dictionary) cites Stephen Fry(tonight's MC) as the inventor of the word luvvie, so blame him!

In total Britain won four Oscars last night -best actor Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), the Silent Child best short film, Roger Deakins for cinematography of Blade Runner 2049 (after 14 nominations in the past) and one of the make up artists from Darkest Hour as well. Not a bad haul considering we only won one last year and had a record number of nominations in the larger categories with Daniel Kaluuya and Sally Hawkins( second nomination for her) plus the same woman nominated for two different films for costume design. The biggest surprise was The Shape of Water winning best film when the clever money had been on Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - surely one of the longest film titles ever nominated for Oscars.

I thought Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri would sneak the best picture prize.
