IMO, award shows are trite and banal. Only in Hollywood can you congratulate yourself 5 times for the same thing, when kind words from peers should suffice. You already get unearned wealth, unparalleled graf, perks and junkets, and vapid public praise thru celebrity, and still you want to indulge the rest of the world for you to get an award for all of this? Ridiculous. On top of all of this, the dozen or so talk shows exists primarily for you to plug your next film and for you to talk about your privileged life. Pathetic. I for one, am happy I never fell prey to they hype of celebrity. The Oscars are as pointless as the Grammys for determining artistic merit.

The American awards are mind-numblingly boring and long and I pity those that watch the whole night. The speeches are overlong and they thank everyone from their families to God but BAFTAs are different, speeches are kept to a minimum thank goodness.

The OSCARs are this weekend and the clever money is on LINCOLN especially for Daniel Day-Lewis to take the Best Actor Oscar. Adele should take it for the Best Song in a film with 'Skyfall' and that will complete an amazing year for her with even more honours.
Anne Hathaway has a good chance for Best Actress in Les Miserables and Best Film could feature that plus Lincoln, Argo and Zero Dark Thirty. Results will be added here on Monday.

Les Miserables is one of the best films I have ever seen, the acting is superb and the final scene even got a tear from this cynical old warrior. No chance of any Major awards then!

I saw Liam Neeson on the one show in 2008. He mentioned about playing Lincoln in a bio-pic to be made in 2009, 2009 was of course the bi-centenary of Lincolns birth.
And what is it about British actors in great American historical films? Those of you with long memories will remember "gone with the wind", and of the four stars in that film three were British. And now a British (or is he Irish?) actor is playing the greatest American president. |

Hmm true but look at three American actresses playing Brits-Gwyneth Paltrow(Sliding Doors), Renee Zellweger(Bridget Jones's Diary 1 & 2) and of course Dick van Dyke(Mary Poppins) okay not so much for his portrayal of Bert the sweeper but other characters within that film. We as Brits complained why couldn't British actresses play these roles but as it turned out they were very good and now you cannot imagine anyone else being Bridget Jones or for that matter Eddie in Roger Rabbit being played by Bob Hoskins. Look at Les Miserables-written by a Frenchman and yet not a single French actor in the film or stage play. Daniel Day-Lewis has proved that he is a fine actor and if means playing a great American statesman like Lincoln so be it-Spielberg rarely gets it wrong...and don't forget James Bond was once played by an Aussie!
I think it is a case of if you can get the accent right rather than look that part, you are halfway to being a decent actor. Liam Neeson is a fine actor but maybe he lacked the real oomph that a Day-Lewis has. It is true that some of the top rated television in the US is fronted by Brits-Damian Lewis(Homeland), Hugh Lawrie(House) Sir Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard Star Trek: TNG) whereas years ago this would have been thought impossible.

Well this is it tonight, or to be more precise early this morning British time we will find out who has won what in the Oscars- I am not staying up for that but I hope to have the winners added here tomorrow at some point. I will wait for the highlights if only to see what they do for the James Bond Anniversary. Fingers crossed for the Brits nominated in various categories.

So, does that mean that LIFE OF PI "won"?
No one else got four Oscars, did they? |
