History has recorded Errol's birth in Hobart which is the state capital of Tasmania. While there are similarities due to its proximity to Australia in both history & culture, several factors acknowledge that it is also different. The majority of Australians do not view Errol Flynn as an Australian actor! The picture posted is from 1923 in London.

Read his autobigraphy 'My wicked, wicked ways' twenty plus years ago, one of the best reads I've ever had and would highly recommend it.
A great teller of tall tales, Errol's story was far more outlandish and exciting than any of his films. Not sure how much of it was true, but even if only some, the guy lived a wild life most of us can only dream. Have been a fan ever since.

How very true Marlon! The first printing of Errol's book which was greatly assisted by the late Earl Conrad had no passages that were censored while subsequent editions deleted what was written regarding certain details involving mostly his first wife Lili Damita. My Wicked, Wicked Ways originally published in 1959 shocked many such as Noel Coward but the book was ahead of its time in flamboyant style. No doubt there were elements that may have been fiction but for the most part it seemed accurate. Tony Thomas wrote a very fine book titled "Errol Flynn: The Spy Who Never Was" but I believe it's long out of print. Errol did so much more in 50 years than most of us could ever do in 100!

To fans of Errol Flynn I recommend reading the David Niven book 'Bring On The Empty Horses'. Niven and Flynn were good friends and Niven gives a great insight into the character of Flynn. Actually the book gives great insight into Hollywood of a bygone era.

Always fun to watch
Errol Flynn was the finest of the swashbucklers - surpassing even the excellent Douglas Fairbanks - and one fine rogue, as well. 'The Sea Hawk' is my favorite Flynn feature.
BTW, the next time you're watching Robin Hood remember that Basil Rathbone, the finest swordsman in Hollywood, said he could have killed Flynn at anytime.

Errol would've fucking KILLED Basil in a boxing match -- he once beat up John Huston in a fight over Olivia De Haviland! |

Niven tells how on the set of 'Charge of the Light Brigade' whilst waiting for the shoot to begin lined up on horseback, someone built like a heavyweight had the idea to tickle Flynn's horse with a rubber tipped lance. The horse reared and threw Flynn to the ground and the crowd of extras laughed themselves silly. Flynn got up and shook himself. When he asked which so-and-so did the deed, a supremely confident voice answered "I did". This bloke was really built according to Niven. Flynn went for him like a tiger and beat nine bells out of him. It might of course been a one sided affair since the extra would be conscious that he was in effect fighting the man who was the point of the movie in essence. But Flynn was no shrinking violet. I like Flynn who is a man's man. I am sorry people denigrate his memory and have sought to impose a cowardly and even treasonable narrative on his life. He did not go to war, but then neither did Wayne or George Bush Jnr. Last edited by danton; December 28th, 2009 at 10:26 PM.. |

Agreed. For me, the best of all Flynns ( and Nivens!) was The Dawn Patrol. Flynn, Niven, Rathbone, Donald Crisp ... all perfect.
