I am a fully functioning Stoic
I am changed religion and philosophies.
Formerly a Lutheran, I am now a Stoic. I feel like saying more, but holding back now to see what response this thread generates. Perhaps other non-Christians will post here. Pagans are welcome, too. Interested in others who have had a change of mind. |

I thought a Stoic was a big bird that spent a lot of it's time standing on one leg .

My own experience is that I was brought up in a christian environment, but I came to a point where I would describe myself as an atheist. This doesn't define my beliefs or philosophy, though. It is simply a statement that I am not convinced by any of the arguments for a theistic god, so I don't see any reason to believe in one. My question really arises from the fact that you say you have moved from one structured belief system to another. How did this come about and what makes you happy to attach this new label to yourself? For me, getting rid of the framework of religious doctrine made me feel that I could explore other ways of thinking and take them on their own merits. I expect to spend the rest of my life continuing to learn and continuing to develop my philosophy accordingly. Genuine question, by the way - I'm not taking the piss. |

The atmosphere of organized religion is too close for me.
I began exploring other ideas and concepts following my departure from high school some 15 years ago. My first books were the Timothy Zahn trilogy, and then Marcus Aurelius, and some 300 books and a few more years, I decided to change. At the moment I am somewhat sick, so I hope no offense is taken if a long, cogent explanation of my Stoic philosophy is withheld for the time being. I have an easier time visualizing god as a woman. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pneuma_%28Stoic%29 The "breath of life" or perhaps a living fire within each of is my conception of a deity or prime mover. Stoics are usually more considered, reserved and rational in their approach to life; kinda Vulcan like! I always find Stoicism and pragmatism work well together.
If I may ask, what was the reaction when you switched? I myself am an Atheist and as well as Stoicism enjoy Nietzsche's philosophy, which I came to in a roundabout way. It's a shame his philosophy is widely misunderstood yet often quoted. Stoicism is quite the discipline. |

As soon as I have any vague semblance of proof that any of you have truly embraced stoicism, I'll give you respect for that.
In the meantime, posting a statement like this on a forum such as this isn't a whole lot of proof, y'know? Just sayin'. |

But then you have to be realistic: this is forum for tits. An announcement is sufficient I thought. I am not here to defend myself. |
