As Jenny Agutter stares off into space as her husband drones on about his banal day at work and job prospects - as she revisits in her mind's eye the purity and joyful, carefree simplicity of children at play, Her, Her Brother and the Aboriginal Boy swimming naked at the water hole... Actor and magician Ricky Jay has died at the age of 72.
Jay was born in Brooklyn, NY and was introduced to magic at a young age by his grandfather. He is likely the youngest magician to have performed a full magic act on television at the age of four on a program called Time For Pets. He was also very likely the first magician to play comedy clubs and to open for rock and roll bands. In the 1960's he performed on a bill between Ike & Tina Turner and Timothy Leary (who was giving a dissertation on LSD). Three of Jay's one-man shows were directed by playwright and magic aficionado David Mamet, who also cast him in several of his films. Some of Jay's cinematic appearances included a henchman in Tomorrow Never Dies, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, The Spanish Prisoner, Mystery Men, Incident at Loch Ness, The Prestige, and The Brothers Bloom. His television appearances include Saturday Night Live, The X-Files, Mythbusters, Deadwood, The Simpsons, and Teen Titans Go! Jay was on numerous talk shows throughout his career including David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show and many others. Jay was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for throwing a playing card at 190 feet at 90mph. He was widely considered one of the greatest sleight of hands experts in the world. As an expert in magic, gambling, and con games he was the go-to consultant for Hollywood projects. He taught Robert Redford how to manipulate coins for The Natural and designed the wheelchair that hid Gary Sinese's legs in Forrest Gump. Other projects on which Jay advised were The Prestige, The Illusionist, Sneakers, Wolf, Heartbreakers and Ocean's Thirteen. He has worked with libraries and museums on their magic collections, gave numerous lectures, and wrote both articles and books on conjuring, con games, sense perception, and unusual entertainment. Jay died on November 24th although no other details were currently available. He had been married to producer and production manager Chrisann Verges from 2002 until his death.

Ricky Jay was a legend. I think he was in most David Mamet films. His best performance was in House of Games. R.I.P.
