Default Richie Hayward

Original founding member of Little Feat drummer Richie Hayward has passed away at age 64 of liver cancer. Along with Lowell George, Roy Estrada and Bill Payne, Hayward founded Little Feat in 1969 and they went on to release some classic albums in the 1970's. Little Feat reformed after a hiatus follwing the death of Lowell George in 1979 and were still touring and entertaining a devoted fan base. Hayward has been suffering from liver cancer for a few years and was waiting a transplant when he succumbed to a bout of pneumonia. He was a great drummer and music fans will mourn his loss. Rest In Peace Richie Hayward.

Default Bobby Thomson

American baseball great Bobby Thomson passed away at the age of 86 in Savannah Georgia. Born in Glasgow, Scotland but raised in Staten Island New York, Thomson hit what many consider the greatest home run in baseball history. Known as "The Shot Heard 'Round The World", the home run off of Ralph Branca of the Brooklyn Dodgers gave Thomson and his NY Giants the National League Pennant in 1951. The event has taken on an almost mythic stature and has gained a permanant place in the lexicon of American sports. The broadcast of the home run is provided in the link below. Rest in peace Bobby Thomson.

Default Cyril Smith - R.I.P.

The veteran Liberal Democrat politician Sir Cyril Smith has died at the age of 82, the party has confirmed.

Sir Cyril represented the constituency of Rochdale as an MP, both for the Liberal Party and the Liberal Democrats, for 20 years. He was one of the party's most recognisable and high-profile figures, retiring from Parliament in 1992.

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg said Sir Cyril was a "larger-than-life" character who would be missed. Sir Cyril was chief whip during Jeremy Thorpe's turbulent leadership of the party in the 1970s.

A Lib Dem spokesman said Sir Cyril had been ill for many months and had died on Friday morning, with members of his family by his bedside.

Fiercely independent and blunt-speaking, Sir Cyril frequently clashed with his party over issues such as capital punishment, nuclear weapons and abortion.

He was sceptical about the party's merger with the SDP in the 1980s as well as its pact with Labour in the 1970s which kept Jim Callaghan's government in office.

He was a Labour supporter in his youth, defecting to the Liberals after serving as mayor of his birthplace, Rochdale.

After winning a by-election in 1972, he went on to play a key role in holding the party together during the 1970s amid allegations about Mr Thorpe's private life, which subsequently led the leader to resign. Sir Cyril was made an MBE for his public services in 1966 and was knighted in 1988.

His brother Norman told the Press Association news agency: "Cyril passed away peacefully this morning with members of his family around him. I couldn't have asked for a better brother."

Deputy Prime Minister Mr Clegg said he was saddened to hear of the death of the "true Liberal" who was a friend to "everybody in Rochdale". He said: "Cyril Smith was a larger-than-life character and one of the most recognisable and likeable politicians of his day."

The last surviving player of the very first World Cup final was the Argentinian inside right, Francisco 'Pancho' Varallo. Varallo made it to a round ton, dying at the age of exactly 100 on 30th August. He was all of 5' 4" and scored 181 goals in just 210 games for Boca Juniors, surely a precursor of Diego Maradona. I doubt that Pancho will get as many obituary notices as Maradona will when Diego's time is up, but this is my brief one from a football historian.

Default Robert Schimmel

American stand-up comedian Robert Schimmel has died at age 60 of injuries sustained in an auto accident in Phoenix, AZ. The critically acclaimed comedian was best known for his raunchy, x-rated routines that delved into his own sex life and his courageous battle with liver cancer which he had fought successfully for many years. He was one of the funniest people I have ever seen perform stand-up. A very gifted storyteller who was not afraid to reveal his own insecurities and vulnerabilities. He appeared on Conan Obrien and David Lettermam many times. I implore people to seek out his stand-up clips so one can appreciate an underrated comedic genius. This is a real shame because of his previous battles with cancer and his subsequent recovery. A very large loss for the comedy world.

Take a look here.

Default Andy Sidaris

I'm not sure if this should go in the R.I.P. or the In Memory thread. One could argue that it could also belong in the Pl*ym*tes in the Movies thread... Anyway:

Andy Sidaris, born February 20, 1931, died March 7, 2007. An early sports director for ABC (and won an Emmy in 1959), he is now more famous for his work directing Pl*ym*tes in a series of low-budget campy spy flicks from 1973-1998.

Beginning with Stacey: The Centerfold Private Eye in 1973, Mr. Sidaris came across the winning idea of writing fairly basic action scripts (possibly an understatement) and then peppering them with beautiful Pl*yb*y Pl*ym*tes and other sexy women. While his earliest work:

Stacey (1973)
Seven (1979)
Malibu Express (1985)

tended to treat the on-screen females more as mindless decoration, he eventually came to realize that the films would be even bigger hits if he actually put Pl*ym*tes in the lead roles. So began the famous Triple-B (Bullets, Bombs, and Babes) series, which for most of its run featured impressively tough-looking (but still sexy) March 1984 Pl*ym*te Dona Speir:

Hard Ticket to Hawaii (1987) - Speir and partner Hope Marie Carlton, with Cynthia Brimhall and Patty Duffek.

Picasso Trigger (1988) - Speir and Carlton, with Roberta Vasquez, Kym Malin, Liv Lindeland, Brimhall and Duffek.

Savage Beach (1989) - Speir and Carlton, with Teri Weigel, Duffek, and non-Pl*ymate Lisa London.

Guns (1990) - Speir and new partner Roberta Vasquez, with Cynthia Brimhall, Devin DeVasquez, Kym Malin, Liv Lindeland, and non-Pl*ym*tes London, Allegra Curtis (daughter of Tony Curtis), Phyllis Davis, and Donna Spangler (who was featured in Pl*yb*y in a non-Pl*ym*te role).

Do or Die (1991) - Speir and Vasquez, with Brimhall and non-Pl*ym*tes Ava Cadell, Carolyn Liu, and Pandora Peaks.

Hard Hunted (1992) - Speir and Vasquez, with Brimhall and non-Pl*ym*tes Cadell, Liu, and Becky Mullen.

Fit to Kill (1993) - Speir and Vasquez, with non-Pl*ym*tes Julie Strain (P*nth*ouse Pet of the Year 1993), Sandra Wild, Cadell and Liu.

After Fit to Kill Andy Sidaris passed the reigns to his son Christian Drew Sidaris. Andy stayed on board, however, as an executive producer:

Enemy Gold (1993) - New lead Suzi Simpson, Kym Malin and non-Pl*ym*tes Julie Strain, Stacey Lynn Brown, Angela Wright, and Tanquil Lisa Collins (who had posed in Pl*yb*y after an alleged affair with U.S. Senator Chuck Robb).

The Dallas Connection (1994) - An almost no-Pl*ym*te cast, with new lead Julie Strain, Wendy Hamilton, a cameo from Kym Malin, and non-Pl*ym*tes Samantha Phillips (P*nth*use Pet of the Month June 1993) Julie K. Smith (P*nth*use Pet of the Month February 1993, Kym Malyk, and T.J. Myers.

The Christian Sidaris films unfortunately were not as big hits, possibly because they did not quite capture the spirit of his father's work. As a result, Andy soon made a brief return:

Day of the Warrior (1996) - Non-Pl*ym*tes Julie Strain and Julie K. Smith in the lead (with Smith reprising her role as "Cobra" from The Dallas Connection, providing confirmation that the Andy and Christian Sidaris films were meant to be taken as one continuing series), with Shae Marks and non-Pl*ym*tes Raye Hollitt, Tammy Parks, Carolyn Liu, and Christiva Turner.

L.E.T.H.A.L. Ladies: Return to Savage Beach (1998) - Pets Strain and Smith, with Carrie Wescott, and additional non-Pl*ym*tes Carolyn Liu and Ava Cadell. Oddly enough, it was at this late stage of the game that Mr. Sidaris finally gave a specific name for his spies' agency: L.E.T.H.A.L.: Legion to Ensure Total Harmony And Law.

Return to Savage Beach marked the end of the Triple-B series; Mr. Sidaris kept active over the next few years with occasional directing jobs for Pl*yb*y Video, something he had been doing for two decades. Sadly, though, his health took a quick decline after he was diagnosed with throat cancer in late 2006. He died March 7, 2007.

Andy Sidaris has been called "one of the greatest writers/directors of 'guy flicks' the free world has ever known". It would be difficult to argue with that description. Yes, he loved beautiful women (while reportedly remaining completely faithful to his longtime wife Arlene). He also, however, had a childlike enthusiasm over a myriad of subjects: fast cars, aircraft, ridiculously large guns, and radio control vehicles.

It was Sidaris' attempts to include all of his loves in every film that made his body of work such a goofy fun mess. A director who took himself far more seriously could never have created movies nearly as entertaining. Andy Sidaris wanted everything on display at once, and structure be damned. Moreover, if he liked one of his female performers, and her character had been killed, he'd simply give her a new name, change her from villain to hero (the heroes almost never died in his films), and stick her in the next movie. You have to admire that kind of blind defiance of logic and continuity.

Andy Sidaris was a big kid who was allowed to play with all of his favorite toys, and put it all on film. He was generous enough to share his fun with the world. We won't be seeing his like again.
