That is always going to happen, and the grounds should be built so it will not be a factor.

Looks like the Dodgers will be keeping Clayton Kershaw after all.

It really is a shame that Washington seems to have little interest in retaining Bryce Harper. I hope that he gets healthy and puts up 5 years like 2015 for his new team. |

Joe Mauer has announced his retirement. IMO he is a first ballot Hall of Famer. Like Johnny Bench, injuries have shortened his career. Catching is such a brutal position. Buster Posey is another player beginning to look like a shell of his former self. All this makes Ivan Rodriguez's accomplishments even more remarkable - 2427 games as a catcher with 20,348 innings caught.

For the record, if I am a general manager there is no way in hell that i can recommend to ownership signing Bryce Harper to a $300+ million 10 year contract. Harper will probably have some monster seasons in the next few years, but he has gotten hurt about every other season. Tying up that much of my salary cap on an injury prone player is just not a responsible decision.
As a matter of fact, I would rather put my money into scouting and high quality minor league instruction than sign anybody to a monster contract. Even Mike Trout who was still worth 3 quality regulars in 2017 despite missing 48 games with injuries. Trout is the best bet to maintain value, but it is very unlikely that he will put up 3 more 10 win seasons. I wouldn't be surprised to see several nines and some eights, however. But one drunk driver running a red light can end it all in an instant. |

Congrats to Mariano Rivera, Edgar Martinez (finally), Mike Mussina and the late Roy Halladay, all elected to the Hall of Fame today. Rivera was the first candidate to be elected unanimously.

Padres and Machado agree on contract
This is something that I never would have thought would happen, even though there has been real talk the past few weeks about the team negotiating with both Harper and Machado. WOW!
Winners and losers from Machado's $300 million deal with Padres And on a sadder note, today's Union-Tribune also had an article reporting that Bruce Bochy has said this will be his last season managing the Giants. He was a good manager with the Padres, and shouldn't have been let go - but it worked out really well for him and Tim Flannery.

I don't think Manny cares as much about winning as he does about getting paid, but that's just me. He will not get his HR's or RBI's in Petco Park, and if the Padres don't get better pitching, they won't win much. On the other hand, San Diego is a great place to live. Excellent climate, not on a fault line, and great bars and restaurants, and of course, Legoland and the San Diego Zoo.
