Happy days... the first kit my father made me wasn't a Spitfire. Oh no. It was a Lysander! Then that very happy Christmas when the brand-new Airfix 1:24 Spitfire was my big present. Getting more serious and building Tamiya tanks...

Great thread, this has taken me back years.
I also collected the Aurora horror models in the 60's. Here are the ones I had. My favourites where The Phantom Of The Opera (I loved the little man in the dungeon) and the working model of The Guillotine.

Yes, the good old times...where have they gone?
Oh Boy, it really does
When I was 12 years old, I first saw a collection of 1:72 scale WorldWar2 airplans and tanks at my friendīs house... ...and I became an addict. There was an excellently sorted toy-store in the hometown I lived and they had everything on 2 floors. Airfix, Revell, Tamiya... So I started my own collection of 1:72 WW2-items myself. First was a Spitfire (or a Hawker Hurricane), and the collection grew and grew. The Spit was horribly glued and painted by myself, but the growing routine on assembling these kits and the splendid source to buy them just around the corner, made it a very lasting hobby for me...just until the girls crossed my paths All was then packed in cartons being stored in the "attic" and ten years later, I was then giving this all to my little cousin who turned to be interested and was lucky to have them. Some years back, I have asked him where he did store the 1:72īs. He said, he dumped them while moving to another house ...and I was close to murder him When VEF is turning to bore me one day, I will perhaps reconsider reviving that hobby ...just because of the smell of glue and paint, of course |

Where are they now ?
AMT and some other toy companies made model kits, cars, airplanes, etc. in the US.
I remember there was this older half brother of these two kids I played with, and he was really good at making model cars. I got some ideas from him. There were model car building magazines, and toy stores would have contests. I actually got a couple of trophies for my cars, one an Olds Cutlass, took first place in the Junior Division, and later I had a Chevy Chevell take third in the Intermediate. I also won a prize for second place with a Plymouth Barracuda at another store's contest. I guess it was a fad, and after that interest waned and only hard core enthusiasts continued to build models. Kinda like those old electric train fanatics that have huge lifelike layouts in their homes. |
