Martin Landau was a big bad of my happy childhood , watching Space 1999 episodes and collecting the Space 1999 sweet ' cigarette stick ' cards - Space 1999 TV Series (49 different cards from the set of 50 - I never did get the No 42 scarce card which is extremely rare as it was withdrawn from sale soon after release as it was deemed to graphic for children - I sold the set of cards ( minus 42 ) a few years ago for £ 40 ! The packs had 10 candy sticks and 1 card. Sweet cigarettes were sticks of sugar candy with a red tip, made to look like cigarettes but aimed at children. They were still popular but controversial in the 1970s, and have almost disappeared since. Cards were 6.5 x 3.5 cm, with colour photo from Yr 1, and a description on reverse. The cards formed a set of 50. Card number 42, a portrait shot of the scarred Mateo from "The Troubled Spirit", was withdrawn (understandably, considering it was fairly graphic), and is therefore very scarce. A few were issued, however . |

I recently completed watching the first and second series of 'Mission Impossible' on CBS Action satellite channel here and often wondered why Martin Landau was always down as a special appearance by, yet installed in the main cast by series two. I remember him better as Commander John Koenig in Space 1999 of course but I also recently saw him in later film, 'Bridge of Spies' and he was very good in that. Being a lifelong member of The Gerry Anderson Appreciation Society of Fanderson as it known I know many members will be greatly saddened by his passing at 89 as am I.

Two in one weekend...
We have lost two genre legends in one weekend. We will miss you. There are two lights that have gone out and can't be replaced. R.I.P. Martin Landau and goodbye George A Romero.

Not to mention The Majestic with Jim Carrey. Wasn't planning on watching that, but it turned out to be quite a good story.
