Split Second (1992)

Trailer

In this Blade Runner/Alien/Predator rip-off, Harley Stone (Rutger Hauer) is a paranoid cop who lives on coffee, cigarettes and chocolate. The setting is a future London, a city plagued by floodings due to climate change and a series of bizarre and brutal murders. The police don't know who or what is responsible for the murders but it appears to have killed Stone's partner some years back. A rookie cop, Neil Duncan (Dick Durkin), is assigned to Stone as his new partner on Captain Thrasher's (Alun Armstrong) orders to keep the psychotic veteran cop under close watch. But as Durkin is actually interested in catching the killer, they become friends and get to, uh, get to work.

Another ridiculous B movie with predictable characters and genre clichés. But Hauer delivers a very funny performance. He shoots at everything that moves and yells or attacks everyone who dares to glimpse at him.

Lola und Bilidikid (1999)

Trailer

Set in Berlin, the story follows Murat (Baki Davrak), a 17-year-old Turkish kid who lives with his mother and macho brother Osman (Hasan Ali Mete) who insists that Murat loses his virginity to a prostitute. But Murat is gay and very insecure. One day he finds out that he has a third brother who was thrown out of the household for being gay and who now works as a drag queen, using the name Lola. Murat sets out to meet Lola in the bar where he/she works. There he also meets Lola's macho boyfriend Bilidikid (as in Billy the Kid) who runs around dressed like Fonzie and who hates himself for being gay. He wants Lola to have a sex reassignment surgery, so they could marry but Lola knows that he will leave her/him because he'll never be able to change the fact that he's into men.

Quite an interesting film that explores the homosexual subculture among Turkish immigrants. I guess if this film was made nowdays, the Erdogan fans in Germany would go berserk. The film has an important message but fails to deliver it with convincing performers and devoid of stereotypes. All in all, Lola is not a picture worth seeing but I caught it on television.

The excellent John Rhys-Davies is the captain of a cruise ship that is being used to ship a live Chupacabra out from an island, when a couple of greedy workers open the crate trying to steal the contents the beast gets loose on board the ship and before long it is eating into the crew and passengers.

Been a while since I watched this, but I recall it actually being decently good, especially compared to more recent SYFY channel output. The Chupa suit is solid and props must be given for using almost entirely practical effects instead of SYFY's usual lackluster cgi.

All of the following I consider good & would recommend.

The Sentinel (2006)
- Longoria rocks a suit.

16 Blocks (2006)
- David Morse is such a great villain.

Harry Brown (2009)
- Caine doing Death Wish basically. But with DW 1 & 2, the tragedies that befell Kersy's family were abrupt & unexpected. This film does a good job of showing the slow burn misery & helplessness of living surrounded by sadist.

True Crime (1999)
- God I love James Woods.

Il caso Moro (1986)

Il caso Moro (The Moro Affair) is about the kidnapping of Aldo Moro (portrayed by Gian Maria Volonté), the leader of the Italian Christian Democrats, on March 16th 1978. He's held captive by the Red Brigades who demand that their comrades be released from prison. But the government and Moro's party colleagues are more concerned with their careers and reputations than saving Moro who becomes aware of their power games. After 55 days, the government has failed to save him and Moro ends up executed by the Red Brigades who leave his corpse in the trunk of a red Renault in the center of Rome.

Another excellent political thriller from Italy that tries to show the struggles and humanity of all its protagonists and the hypocrisy of those in power, especially in their dealing with Moro's family.

Bigfoot (2012)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1876261/

First of all it's an Asylum SyFy Channel movie so you know it's not to be intended seriously in any way, it's just fun.
Set in a small American town in the mountains, a radio DJ is organising an 80's rock concert with the promise of famous guests, his former bandmate is now an eco-warrior upset by the local forest being culled for the concert.
The concert is rudely interrupted by a 20 foot at least CGI beast as Alice Cooper (yes it is him !) performs on the Deadwood stage so you should almost expect a calamity chain That's just the beginning if you think it cannot get dafter it does with trumps

I'm still stunned by the fact that it was directed by Bruce Davison who also stars as Sheriff Walt Henderson. Probably a tribute to his character in Harry and the Hendersons. Twin Peaks' Sherilyn Fenn, The Wire's Andre Royo and Alice Cooper are also in it. I'm sure it's fun for the viewer but less fun for their careers.

The Stone Killer

A Michael Winner/Charles Bronson movie that I had not seen hitherto, released between The Mechanic and Death Wish.

Since I don't have a copy at hand, I'm watching it on YouTube with Serbo-Croatian(?) subtitles.
