I still rate him as a great comedian and still find his stuff very amusing. Especially his songs, lyrically they are at times comedy genius.
Many great comedians cite Benny as a big influence which suggests those in the industry realised he was a master of his craft. For me the telling factor was at the height of his popularity in the 1970s, The Benny Hill Show on Thames Television was one of the biggest shows on British TV. Now that doesn't seem like much ( there were only 3 or 4 channels then ) but bear in mind how many great Comedy Acts were around then , Morecambe and Wise , The Two Ronnies ( sheer class ) and the late , great Dave Allen ( I used to stay up late to watch his show - he was excellent ) to name others - to be that popular you had to be really good . His vaudeville-style saucy slapstick was, and remains, massively popular around the world. Charlie Chaplin reportedly had a shelf of Benny Hill films in his office. It's shocking that someone of Benny's talent was treated as a pariah. He was the first comic to exploit TV's full potential. He was portrayed as a sexist monster but if you actually watch the shows it's the men who were the targets of his humour - they were inadequate and the ones who walked into lamp-posts and got slapped. Women always ended up with the upper hand. To make people laugh, really belly laugh, that is a rare skill . |

As has been mentioned here before Benny Hill was incredibly popular across the world and his humour seemed to appeal to many people but he made the mistake of keeping on with his sort of humour and not moving with the times and that is why the papers turned on him and forced Thames Television to fire him in a manner that was pretty low even for them. They seemed to conveniently forgot that he helped to make that franchise so popular in the US for instance.
As an aside to this I have been working on some Benny Hill stuff, mostly his Hill's Angels and have posted several home-made videos featuring the girls and indeed I have others. These feature the girls that were very popular and also turned up in other roles. Those done are Louise English, Alison Bell and Lindsay Neil(already posted elsewhere) Watch for Alison's first one coming soon to the main Benny Hill Girls thread. Lastly I see that Benny Hill did a series of radio programmes on Radio 4 and you can access those via Radio 4 Extra via BBC iPlayer which you can get on phone and tablet and pc.

Well, I'm going to weigh in on the possibility/probability that the above model is Sam Spencer-Lane. I checked afew Hill's Angels routines where there are closeups of Sam Spencer Lanes' chest , stomach, and looked at this models chest, stomach. The model above has a birthmark on her stomach, right side. Sam Spencer Lane doesn't have a birthmark there, and Spencer-Lane has 2 moles, 1 beneath her left breast and one to the left of her navel. The one under her left breast is quite prominent. The model above doesn't have these marks.
I had to shake my head a few times looking at this model to think "Is that really Samantha Spencer-Lane? One of my favorite Hill's Angels after Louise English and Corrine Russell?" So, I ran to my DVD's and the best closeups of Spencer Lane (showing the most skin of course) is Chez Ben Grand Gala. I really really REALLY hoped the above model was her, but I honestly think it is just a really really good lookalike. Also, just thinking about it now, the models lower lip sort of droops or hangs down a little when she smiles, quite unlike Sam Spencer Lane. So, those are my two cent, or three or four.

For what it is worth I don't believe that the above is Samantha Spencer-Lane because it would be the find of the year for starters but for another I don't ever remember her being bared for a magazine-and god knows she should have been like others (Lindsay Neil, Anne Bruzac etc)

Sue once told me she'd been asked, several times, to be a Page Three girl but always turned them down as "I was a bit too shy."

I remember some of this guy when I was growing up, but since I'm in the U.S. I didn't know he (the show) was from another country, I just loved seeing the girls on there. It's kinda like Monty Python, where I didn't know where or when the show would come on & was very difficult to even know where to look for the show.
Thanks for this forum & to this thread, I can bring back those days of watching what I did & to know more about Benny & the show. THANKS |
