Unbroken.

Wasn't sure if this was going to be something I would like but it is the type of film you cannot wait to see how it ends. True Story as well.

Default Week 4 of 2015

This Could Be the Night (1957) - Proper young schoolteacher starts working nights as a secretary in a seedy nightclub. Fast-moving story is fun to watch until it decides to plop an unlikely romance into the middle of things. 6/10

American Sniper (2014) - [Best Pic nom #3] The dramatized life of US Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, his tours in Iraq and the stress it puts on him and his family. Lost in all the hype is whether or not this is a good film and while it's a top-notch portrait of the horrors of urban Iraqi conflict, that point is established fairly early on, yet director Clint Eastwood felt it was necessary to punctuate it over and over. By a certain point, we get it. More balance between the wartime tours and him re-adjusting to homelife would have been better, and more compelling. Bradley Cooper is tremendous, almost disappearing into the role, and the tech side of things is some of the most impressive I've seen in the genre. 7/10

Johnny Cool (1963) - Small time Sicilian hood is recruited by a Mafia don and groomed to go to America to shake things up with his old rivals. Henry Silva is brutal and undaunted as he moves from city to city settling scores. Quite violent for the times and great to see barhop Elizabeth Montgomery get caught up in Silva's one-man mission. A tad confusing at times though. 7/10

Island of Lost Souls (1932) - Early and perhaps most famous account of the notorious Dr Moreau (Charles Laughton) and the strange goings-on on his remote South Pacific island. Rough and scary stuff that benefits from being made in the pre-Code era. The creepy island atmosphere and its inhabitants that lurk in the shadows is truly the stuff of nightmares. 8/10

I liked that movie enough to get the Criterion blu-ray edition, it's got some great extras. Bela Lugosi had one of his best roles in it. The last couple of days I've watched these 3, the first 2 as Netflix rentals and the 3rd my DVD.

Not a bad movie, not a good one. Lots of action (practical stunts, not CGI) and Danny Trejo.

I included the 2nd pic because of the different title for German version (and because the other cover doesn't even mention the cast - what's up with that?). Guess they wouldn't get the connotation of the word 'hick?' Anyway, a nice little movie with a great cast, a few of which I can't remember having seen before. As always, Chloe knocks it out of the park - and Redmayne does a great Texas accent.

This one has been mentioned once before in this thread, in post 465. I've included a VHS cover, as I think it is a lot better than the one on the front of my DVD. A great bunch of characters, I'm wondering how many of them are stereotypes in British cinema. McKellan and Fry are both hoots in their roles! This is one of those that I watch when I want to smile...

Thankyou tsunamiSD so much for introducing me to these two movies ,both of which didnt even register on my radar ,this is why i think this thread is brillant

p.s. I would really like to see more comments from us [and I include me] on the movies posted by fellow members.
The guys took the effort to critique the movies for us ,so it would be kinda of in good manners to comment and not just post our own stuff ,then it becomes just a list thread....thanks

Just finished The Imitation Game. What a great picture.

True story and very sad the way the Brits treated a real genius.

This film is apparently up for 8 Oscars and in my humble opinion it deserves them all.

Just finished watching the Despecialized edition of Star Wars. Version 2.5 to be exact. I just found out that this actually existed today. Turns out a bunch of Star Wars geeks with way more time, technical ability and dedication to the cause than I'll likely ever have are attempting to give fans what Lucas won't: HD/Blu-Ray quality versions of the un-adulterated original trilogy as they originally appeared in theaters. They are doing this by taking different cuts, releases and obscure versions of the films and doing tons of digital voodoo to the video and audio.

The Original Trilogy is my favorite series of movies. I have to say that though I've lost count of how many times I've seen them all this was a real pleasure to watch. There were only a couple things missing from what I remember to be the original version so it was great. And yes...Han shoots first. In fact Greedo never even got a shot off.

I'd love to tell you precisely where to find it but I can't due to forum rules. I did get it off of a torrent tracker. I will however share the link for the Vox.com news article about this effort, which will get you going on the path to finding them as I did, if you so desire.

http://www.vox.com/2015/1/30/7952859...ition-download

...Tomorrow night it's Empire time. It should be great.

The Three Musketeers 1973,Another of My "Watch every time" movies,IMHO the best version of the classic tale,By turns comic and thrilling, the cast is damn near perfect,Oliver Reed-never less than watchable,Frank Finlay,Richard Chamberlain,Michael York...And Raquel Welch-Say no more.Comedy greats Roy Kinnear and Spike Milligan offer sterling comic support. The script by "Flashman" author George MacDonald Fraser is a masterpiece in it's own right,The sets, costumes and attention to background detail is superb as well.
