You're mostly correct, it was illegal to brew for domestic consumption. To brew for export was still legal.

Tests conducted by the University of Copenhagen have concluded that atmospheric acidity has been reduced to levels found in the 1930's.

Researchers retrieved ice cores from Greenland for their tests as snow that falls there does not melt but instead gets compressed into layers of ice. These layers of ice annually record the atmosphere by trapping greenhouse gases and pollutants. The scientists are then able to test the layers individually and make their comparisons. The tests differentiated between man made acids and natural acids from forest fires and volcanoes. Scientists credit the anti-pollution measures implemented in the 1970's for the reversal.
