I suspect all soldiers are, by definition, right wing. Time will tell whether being all GI Joe on the battlefield is a useful quality to have as a Member Of Parliament.

Not really. Maybe seems more-so from conflicts staffed by professional (as opposed to conscript) forces? /shrug/ There were plenty of WW1 & WW2 returnees whose political views were not at all right wing. One more recent example that springs readily to mind: John Kerry enlisted and served in Vietnam: are his views right wing?

I went to bed not long after posting. I saw your post when I got up. Since then. I've driven 2 hours to Phillip Island. Spent all day there. Drove back, the logged on not long after getting back.

True, but there's almost nothing in between Perth and Canberra, unless uninhabitable desert counts

I'm basing my view on my time as a draftee during the early seventies. I can't begin to express my abiding hatred of all things to do with military, that that experience left me with.
Sufficed to say, I wouldn't be in any crowd welcoming back people who are silly enough to put themselves in harms way fighting a war that is nothing to do with us.
America wasn't the only nation that learnt nothing from Vietnam.
