That just made me feel dirty, because it was a joke that implied that women around the store were completely powerless to avoid such slimy advances.

I think part of the secret is to make sure that the sexist guys always seem as dumb as, or dumber than, the women they're drooling over. That tends to even out the comedy.
That's British comedy at that it was bawdy, and innuendo-ridden but that sort of comedy goes back years to the days of Max Miller-a comedian in the style of Benny Hill but he would come out on stage and say which jokes did people want to hear-the white joke book or the blue one, and most would say blue, although compared to today, those so-called blue jokes might be seem as merely whimsical observations without the swearing you get today. It also stems from the saucy postcards of Donald McGill where innuendo was rife

Men would appear as lascivious idiots and it was the women that usually got the upper hand in the end-As I said above On the Buses was just such a comedy where two rather sad individuals spent their time trying to get their legs over with women, but not as endearing as say Sid James might be in Carry On films.

Reg Varney spent a lot of his career doing On the Buses
(if memory serves Hammer did the Movie versions )

I think Reg was a very popular guy with the British public, almost
on a par with Harry Secombe.
Its a wonder he never got the call from the Carry On crew
I think he would have been great in the Carry On movies.

Horror is my genre specialty, both as a writer and as a viewer. I used to have a British friend who was into similar subject matter, and every single time someone asked what everyone's favorite Hammer film was, he would reply "On the Buses".

Lord, I hope he was joking. I only saw the first film (and none of the TV series), but it was pretty rough going.

Actually he was right, Hammer did make 'On the Buses' as well as the horror films-mind you they were horror-able! Carry On's were made mostly at Pinewood Studios and directed by Gerald Thomas, written by Talbot Rothwell, with music by Eric Rogers.

Sounds like Peter Rogers was a tight wad.. by all accounts !

Funny you should mention Horror Polar cos Ive always thought there's a link
between Hammer Horror and Carry On movies...
They both started around the mid 1950s,
They both had they re hey day in the 1960s
They both went off the rails about the mid 1970s

They both became British institutions ... full of nostalgia
( which is about all the Brits have left ! )
I found a Hammer thread , started by Lovegod
(of blessed memory )

Here is another thought or coincidence the Doctor series of films started in the mid 50's and finished in 1970 and while there were only seven of them they were all produced by Betty Box who was the wife of Peter Rogers who produced all the Carry On films.

I'm pretty sure it was Confessions Of A Plumber's Mate, and I believe she played a barmaid. But as for appearing nude in P***B**, did that really happen? If so which issue?

I remember seeing Sid James, not just in Carry on and Hancock's Half Hour but a rare film, not seen much these days called 'Three Hats for Lisa' where he does a song and dance routine in a story about a pretty girl that wants to collect three different hats, one being a policeman's helmet, and he was very good. He was born in South Africa and one of his 'jobs' was a boxer again, he was pretty good at that too.
