I haven't been using IHG, updating its hostfile, or reading this thread in months. For this reason I am now at a loss as to where to begin with finding the best settings with which to update the hostfile.
This got me thinking: would it be possible and/or useful to create a thread (or perhaps update the first post in this thread), with a complete list of all of the latest tested and working edited host information for each image host all in one place (so users wouldn't have to search through this thread for each one individually or figure out which one was the latest for each host)? |

For the most part, the host file that is included in the latest IHG revision is good, there are a few exceptions, like imgbox. we have been nursing that one for a few months now. Page back a few in this topic for the edited imgbox syntax
IHG is now defunct for firefox since revision 48 i think, so you have to use it with pale moon browser. i think the web page is https://imagehostgrabber.com/download.html

IHG works fine with any version of Firefox up to 56 that allows unsigned extensions. I use it with Waterfox.

Use the hosts file from the IHG site that's linked above. The latest version was dated 2017-12-24. If it doesn't auto-install for you (as it should) then you can manually download & install it. If you're recently (re-)installing IHG on your browser you will likely have to do a manual update of the hosts file as the one that arrives with the IHG install is outdated.
If you think you can improve upon any of the included solutions, you're free to edit your hosts file. You're also free to contribute to the ongoing improvement of the hosts file via the IHG website, should you so wish. Quote:

I didn't know that the hosfile had been updated. I checked several times by going to the site, but the sidebar (to this day) still reads, "[5/20/17] Most current Host File (hostf.xml) is dated 5/20/17." FOr that reason, I kept assuming that it hadn't been updated. Going to the host file page reveals a newer revision, but the rest of the site implies that the latest was the one from 5/20/2017. Quote:
I think that you misunderstood what I meant. I didn't mean a list of all of the host file information that's already in the latest hostfile. That would be pointless. I meant a list of the latest working settings for all of those sites that the latest hostfile's settings don't work correctly with. Those that require manual editing to work. For example, imgbox is one such current site, as the latest hostfile settings don't work. My idea is to have one post that is constantly updated with the latest working information for those that need manual editing to work all in one place, so it isn't necessary to hunt through the thread each time to find the latest correct settings. Also, it would be handy as it would be easy to see which hosts need manual editing all in one place, so as not to risk missing any. |

imgbox is the only one that i see that is in need of attention, scroll back a few pages in this topic and you will notice how IHG users have had to manually edit imgbox.

It's not one post but it is all in one forum, with threads for each reported host. Having to update a single post with all that collated info. I suspect would still require some effort. The main step(s) are: a) finding/identifying problematic hosts--describe/report issue, post/link example(s), etc. b) developing solutions for them, testing. d) integrating those solutions into the next host file release. Your proposal is: c) collating all the b) into one post/report prior to d). |

By the way, do you happen to know whether there's a way to check for the currently-installed hostfile version within IHG? I clicked the "Update from online Host File" button, but see no clear way to verify that the update properly downloaded and installed. |

But, if you manually download the most recent file from the IHG site & install it in the default location IHG uses, then you can be reasonably sure it's the one used. Its location is shown in the path across the bottom of the Host File Editor window--typically (but can probably be changed) in your browser's Profiles dir/folder, e.g. Win, PM, etc.: in C:\Users\Yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Moonchild Productions\Pale Moon\Profiles\... etc. Such a manual install should only be necessary once, i.e. future updates should handle fine. In theory such should only be necessary if you've recently (re-)installed IHG, because the default hosts file with that is not current/recent. But anyway, if your IHG is e.g. not working with p&h then have a look at that host solution, & if it doesn't look as it should then do a manual update of the hosts file. Quote:
My scepticism is not meant (entirely) to dissuade your idea. If you think you can make it work then go ahead. I may have missed/misunderstood a wrinkle or two? /shrug/ |
