Default Elisabeth Schwarzkopf "Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss" Guiditta

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PgwmPL2s1Q

Franz Lehar's Giuditta (1934) was written for Jarmila Novotna and Richard Tauber. It's a rather sad and dreary story of a woman who abandons her husband and follows a soldier, only to end up loveless and disillusioned as a nightclub dancer in a shady club in North Africa. This song, however, has proved to be a concert favorite.

It's Over by Roy Orbison
Perhaps My favourite Orbison track,The beauty of the melody and Roy's voice disguise just how sad it is.

Real sad songs are not popular, but something from mainstream...

My English is poor but I'll try to explain. I see that majority of Americans, British... listen only English songs, and due of it, are being denied for many great works of culture and art. I understand, it is not easy to follow anything at other language, but there's a fact - we, non-English born speakers understand your language, slang... pretty much everything, because we dedicate some time to it. In other hand, English-born speakers often act as elephant in crystal-store out of English language environment, art... Simply - you have to know context, read a book, see a movie, or that song is just melody for you.

Again - it is not easy, but it is worth it. I have problem with non-Slavic languages, but after some effort I start to understand whole new space of humor, culture, views... first on English, than French, German, Greek...

So - first part will be first 5 or so Yugoslavian songs I remember from Yugoslav area (I will avoid too incomprehensible ones). Second will be English, again popular here. Every one sad on it's own way.

Зајди, зајди, јасно Сонце
Macedonian traditional

Anything traditional Macedonian is for this list, but you simply have to hear this one. It's very popular "Зајди, зајди, јасно Сонце" (Go Down, Go Down, Clear Sun).

Ema, Emili
Yugoslavian pop, cover

Đorđe Marjanović's "Ema, Emili" - Yugoslav cover of Hot Chocolate "Emma" pop song. One of rare cover versions better than original, without suicide-base-patheticsm from source's one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42LRxwFF6tc

It is hard to find exact translation (usually they just put original text) so I hope that mine will help:

Her youth was extinguished yesterday
and (I) thought that our love is stronger than death
my heart is stonefaced with grief of mourning for her, of pain and tears.

Emili, Ema, Emili, reconcile with that you're no more - no, I can not!
Emili, Ema, Emili, reconcile with that I live without you - no, I can not!

Twenty of your years - onslaught of madness toppled by the damn fate
And it is too early (that) your starry sky (is) conducted by tama and eternal darkness
Oh, would I never again I will not sail the endless blue sea of your eyes?
Oh, would I do not you ever more be drunk of heat of your kisses?

Emili, Ema, Emili, reconcile with that you're no more - no, I can not!
Emili, Ema, Emili, reconcile with that I live without you - no, I can not!

My love died yesterday and I wanted it stronger than death
My heart is transfixed with grief of mourning for her pain and salaries
Stop, stop burring ringing! Perhaps she's (just) asleep. Maybe she dreams...
Oh how beautiful she is in her eternal sleep... No! Do not put those flowers on she... !

Pogledaj me, nevernice
Yugoslavian tavern

"Pogledaj me, nevernice" (Look At Me, Unfaithful [in love]) is real tavern-made song, made by no-name Gypsy band in Yugoslavia in 1970s, created by truth event: love story and betrayal, suffering and decay, revenge, murder, suicide, and aftermath (guy killed some related to adultery and himself, lefting ex-girlfriend to live). Song is full of grammar errors because Gypsies did not write it on their language, but this original, in-vivo, very rough version is the best (members of band actually know poor guy):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRt2TQ3PL7E

You can't find text of this one, so I translate it for you - not literal translation (you have to know slang for that) nor real poem translation, but good enough to follow.

Look 't me, unfaithful,
look 't my weary face,
and on it dark wrinkles,
touch burns-out forehead.

Look 't hands - dry (which life leaves),
hear beats - agony of dying hart,
you're to blame to for all,
(you're one) who put me in a grave alive.

(You're one) don't remember of that time
when you said "(in love) to the grave"?
I love you, don't want other,
You're reason for living and (reason for) 'll die.

(You're) took a knife and kill me,
(you're) one whose hand bury me,
(you're) one which bury me close to road,
close (enough to comfort me) to road you're often walk next to.

- Banned -

Jedan dan života
Mexican (Yugoslavian version)

Can't find Mexican from movie...

"Jedan dan života" (One [more, last] Day Of Life) is one of cover of Mexican song about young man unjustly convicted to death; he is sad about it but he don't want to show it because he don't have strength to say to his mother truth about his destiny.

Because of fate similar to one from text there was many music-videos filmed in name of Yugoslavia (when decision to end with it was choosed by foreigns and quislings, despite some of public opinion) and that videos are - de facto - banned, but song is still very popular at any language.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHkKO41RDqk

Lili Marleen
German

German love song "Lili Marleen" is de facto banned in Yugoslav area and public playing of this song is considered as outrageous and unheard. However, we have it in some WW2 movies, so we easily understand why whole Europe loves it. For us it will be symbol of hard times and shame (it was broadcasted from Radio Belgrade - German Army radio during WW2).

Straight from one of my favorite action movies -- Rambo: First Blood

Dan Hill - It's A Long Road

One of the saddest, yet appropriate, ending songs for the movie. The lyrics and melody perfectly express the character of Rambo. It's emotional, haunting, and powerful all at the same time.

Feeling blue is the colour, football was the aim
Thinking about it, can't recall our last good game
So pity us through our sorrow and pain
'cause Chelsea, Chelsea is our name

Not a song (though Johnny Mercer subsequently wrote a lyric for it and it was a huge hit) but a film theme from the film noir, Laura produced and directed by Otto Preminger in 1944. It was composed by David Raksin, who was one of the best composers ever seen in Hollywood. Raksin related how on the Friday, Preminger had commissioned the tune and wanted it urgently; but Raksin had recently quarrelled bitterly with his wife and a letter from her had just arrived, a letter he dared not open. All Saturday he sat at the piano, staring at the letter. It was Sunday when he steeled himself to open it and read what he knew it said; it was over. She was never coming back. He related that he composed the music at the piano spontaneously and he was crying as he did so. The music was expressing things which he had no words to say.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfrccsbzRLA

The music is an example of a musical lament.
