Jack Ramsay, long-time NBA coach and commentator has passed at the age of 89. Ramsay, known as "Dr. Jack", was a graduate of St. Joseph's in Philadelphia and held a masters and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.

He was basketball coach at his alma mater from 1955 until 1966. After leaving St. Joseph's, Ramsay became the GM of the Philadelphia 76ers, winnning the NBA title in his first season. In 1968, he took over as coach of the 76ers, leading them to three playoff appearances. After trading away Wilt Chamberlain and Chet Walker, the 76ers collapsed in 1972 and missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

Ramsay then became coach of the Buffalo Braves, quickly turning the expansion franchise into a winner. With Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo and dependable players like Randy Smith, Ernie DiGregorio, Gar Heard and Jim McMillan, Ramsay had the Braves in the playoffs in 3 of 4 season. But with the team's future in Buffalo in doubt, Ramsay was allowed to leave.

Ramsay then ended up in Portland and promised the Rose City a winner. In his first season in 1977, the Trail Blazers won the franchise's only championship. Ramsay continued to coach Portland until 1986. He became coach of the Indiana Pacers in 1987 but resigned after 7 games in 1988.

Following his coaching career, Ramsay worked as a color analyst for the 76ers and Miami Heat as well as at ESPN. His son-in-law, Jim O'Brien has been head coach of the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, Indiana Pacers and the University of Dayton.

Default The Back-Up

Earl Morrall (May 17, 1934 – April 25, 2014), veteran of 21 N.F.L. seasons, & best remembered as the backup quarterback who led the Baltimore Colts (1969 & 1971), & later the unbeaten Miami Dolphins (1972) to Super Bowls, died on Friday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. of complications from Parkinson's. He was 79.
All-American quarterback, took Michigan State to a 9-1 season, capped by a victory over U.C.L.A. in the 1956 Rose Bowl. Played for six N.F.L. teams, including the Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, & Detroit Lions. Two-time All-Pro.

A journeyman most of his career, when future Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas incurred an elbow injury in the Colts’ final exhibition game of 1968, Morrall took the team to a 13-1 regular-season & two playoff victories. Led the N.F.L. in TD passes: 26, & was named the league’s most valuable player.... but that season ended in crushing disappointment for Morrall, who threw three interceptions in in the first half of Super Bowl III, & Joe Namath led the underdog Jets to a 16-7 victory, bringing credibility to their upstart American Football League.
Morrall, still with the Colts, bore that stigma until chance for redemption finally came, 2 years later in the 1971 Super Bowl against the Dallas Cowboys. Unitas was again sidelined, with bruised ribs in the second quarter, & Morrall came in to guide Baltimore to a 16-13 victory

Let go by the Colts a year later, 38 year-old Morrall was claimed on $100 waivers by the Miami Dolphins & reunited with Don Shula, who'd been Colts' head coach in 1968...
and as baseball sage,Yogi Berra might have put it, "It was deja vu all over again!"
Dolphin starter Bob Griese sustained leg and ankle injuries in the fifth game of the season, and Morrall took over. Led the Dolphins to a 14-0 regular season, & a playoff win before being benched for a recovered Griese who engineered a come-from-behind win over the Steelers. Griese started their Super Bowl victory 2 weeks later, with no objection from team-player Earl, to complete the NFL's only perfect season, 17-0.
The NFL's Rodney Dangerfield, a man who got little respect, Morrall's part in the perfect season was largely forgotten.

Asked long afterward who he thought was the most valuable player for that Dolphins team, Morrall answered, “Bob Griese for breaking his ankle so I could play.”

This makes me feel sad, and bad at the same time. It's unfortunate this popular voice actor has died, which is sad. At the same time, I personally have been disappointed with his performance as Tony the Tiger, and have felt since he took over the role that someone who more closely emulated Thurl Ravenscroft would be better suited to it. This, unfortunately, was definitely not what I had in mind.

This is a sad story indeed; one always remembers the sheer dynamism and energy of his performances. Harold Shand was a particular feather in his acting cap.

Not to forget the Soviet general leading the Stalingrad city defence, who should have been called Lt General Vassily Chuikov but is actually called Commissar Nikita Krushchev simply because everyone buying tickets in America and Britain knows who Krushchev was.

This man had star quality.
