Nani was unfortunate to get a straight red card for the challenge, but it's not a refereeing howler by any stretch of the imagination.

A Bicycle kick is a legitimate move, but trying to control the ball in mod air isnt. Nani was unaware that Abeola was behind him, so wasnt going in for a challenge. When he saw Arbeola he couldnt pull out.

I'll agree to disagree with you, ............... and move on

Nanis red was pretty soft compared to such wonderful examples as

Roy Keane Ends Håland's Career In Manchester Derby
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_st29mlQwU

Seems to me the punishment in such a fixture never fits the crime
If he'd maimed the other player then fair enough but this dangerous play waffle
without a severe outcome is laughable.

Probably time for a sin bin rule for reckless behaviour like they have in rugby
The other team gets 10 minutes 1 man up as opposed to marring an entire spectacle

If your going to get sent off make it worthwhile

Having seen the Crouch attempt at the overhead kick again, he should not even be trying that as players are in close proximity and Taylor was in clear sight and has ended up being kicked in the face, should have at least been a yellow.

As for Nani, he has just been unlucky, Arbeloa has made in look far worse than it actually was and given the time that elapsed between the foul and the card its possible the lino and even the fourth official have had some say in the matter.

Uefa takes action against Manchester United

Uefa has begun disciplinary proceedings against Manchester United following their Champions League defeat by Real Madrid on Tuesday.
European football's governing body is taking action over Nani's red card and the "non-fulfilment of post-match media obligations" at Old Trafford.
Nani was sent off by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir in the 56th minute for a high challenge on Alvaro Arbeloa.
The English champions went on to lose the tie 3-2 on aggregate.
Nani's red card is subject to a disciplinary review which will decide whether the automatic one-match ban should be extended.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reacted angrily to the sending off and did not appear for the post-match interviews, with assistant Mike Phelan taking his place.
Phelan explained that Ferguson was not in the right frame of mind to speak publicly so soon after the match, saying: "It's a distraught dressing room and a distraught manager. That's why I am sitting here now."

Roy Keane reckons the ref was right, and I agree with him for once! Funny old thing Graham Poll says the ref got it wrong, since he quit Ive never known Poll once back a ref.

Think we know the real reasons why Ferguson didn't come out after the match, he was at near boiling point and with some statements made by him in the past I guess this would have blown them all away and saved himself some grief down the line when he'd be hauled in front of a committee, now Manchester United must face the wrath of UEFA because a figure head wasn;t standing next to a Continental Tyres sign, better deal than Ferguson himself in the proverbial 'hot water'
