Did you know...

The word "strafe", meaning an aircraft attacking a ground target with machine guns, comes from the German World War I expression "Gott strafe England" meaning "God punish England."

Sir Edward Elgars first symphony is the only symphony written in the key of A flat.

Cool Some little known search tricks

Try these Google searches....

1)Searching for "do a barrel roll" or "Z or R twice" will rotate the results page a full 360 degrees.

2)Searching for "tilt" or "askew" using a browser with support for css3 transform, makes the page 'lean' to the right a bit. Searching for anything else puts it right back.

3)Searching for "recursion" shows "Did you mean: "recursion"", which allows you to recursively run searches for recursion.

4)Searching for "define anagram" shows "Did you mean : nerd fame again".

5)Searching for "anagram" shows "Did you mean: nag a ram" in the English version.

6)Searching for "festivus" displays an unadorned aluminum pole running down the side of the list of the search results in recognition of the secular holiday Festivus.

7)Searching for "binary" changes the number of found results to read out in binary, unless personal results are found. This also works with other number systems such as "hexadecimal" and "octal".

8)Searching for "zerg rush" returns a search page with 'O's eating the search results. Clicking each 'O' three times kills it.

9)Also around December 2011 and January 2012, searching for "xmas" or "christmas" or any phrase with "xmas" or "christmas" in, puts a string of colorful lights under the search bar.

10)Searching for horror or halloween related terms returns the result along with three bats on the upper right corner of the page which fly away as soon as the mouse cursor hovers over them.

11)Before and during the span of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, searching for various terms which Google has statistics related to, such as "world cup", "world cup usa vs england", or "world cup brazil", caused the result index at the bottom of the page to read as "Gooooooooooal!" instead of "Goooooooooogle".

12)Around December 2011 and January 2012, Searching for "let it snow" simulates snowfall and frost on the search results. After a while, the search screen fogs up and the blue search button changes to Defrost, enabling the user to defrost the page clicking and rubbing it like a window. Interaction with the actual search screen is disabled until the Defrost button is pressed (even if the entire screen is manually defrosted). Search screen will cease to fog up once the Defrost button is pressed.

You really need to get out more NIN
I think there are others, known as Easter Eggs in Google as well as other programs, and they usually surface about this time of year. Did you happen to see the Google game hidden in the logo last November, which was celebrating 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who?

During the Second World War there was in the desert war an English Lt. General William. H. E. Gott DSO* MC. Who for obvious reasons was known as 'Strafer' Gott! This of course was a play on the German word.

He was killed in August 1942 when his transport plane was shot down and everyone on board was killed.
He was replaced by Lt-Gen. Bernard Montgomery.

Quite correct, so he did! Though at the time all were said to have been killed in the crash, and there was something of a news blackout on it.

Speaking of the War(Second World) they are still finding unexploded shells across the coastlines of Britain. Only the other day munitions were found having been uncovered by the recent flooding and storms. There are said to be thousands of unexploded munitions yet to be found and some might still be dangerous, so if you see a fin sticking out of anywhere phone the bomb disposal squad-via the Police or Coastguard-immediately. It's not just coastlines it is also on building sites too.
