There have been five Labour Prime Ministers of the UK SINCE wwii. Of those five only two have actually used their first name, although Blair called himself Tony rather Anthony.

The Pearl Harbor attack was probably more benificial for the US than to Japan,in a strategic sense.Tactically the Japanese had a good plan, but failed miserably on not conducting a planned third strike. Also if prior warning was given to the US ships there,& they managed to get out of port,& in to the deep water of the PO,as many as three to five US battle ships & of course other smaller ships would have been sunk in much deeper water, making them unsalvagable. The result would have been many more losses of US naval personel. This was noted by several naval experts at that time & even now.

The result was the attack in Pearl, gave a multitude of naval personal on the attacked ships,a chance to swim to the safety of the PH shore. In the very shallow water of PH, all battle ships but one were soon back into action as they were salvaged. Some were very soon against the Japs ,some in less than a year!It was surmized if our A/C carriers were there & either damaged badly or one or more sunk,it would have set back the war effort for the US for at least one year.Another mistake of the Japanese intellegence, they could have waited until the US A/C were in port.

The Japanese attack was inspired by the Royal Navy strike against the Italian naval base at Taranto earlier in the war. Although the British attack was on a much smaller scale, it was far more effective based on the ratio of attacking craft to damage inflicted, plus the net result - the Italians were far more demoralised by Taranto than the USN by Pearl.

Another important difference was the IJN strike took place at dawn, because they (and the USN) had no night-strike capability. The RN attack on Taranto took place at about 11 pm.

Brandt was also an Olympic gold medallist. (Berlin 1936)

Very likely, but ammo would have been ready at the guns, and they would have had their own air cover - I think the US had about 200 aircraft at Pearl Harbor. The Japanese were probably better pilots at the time, and their fighters were better machines, but it would not have been so one-sided

He also got a little gold medal for what happened on 20th July 1944, but this time it was for his world record breaking performance of the splits.

I'll get my coat.........

The Japanese also made a serious strategic error during the attack on Pearl Harbor. They left the drydocks and fuel depot intact. Had the fuel depot been destroyed, it would have, as was said in Tora, Tora, Tora, "if that goes up, it'll blow up half the island." And had they taken out the drydocks, the Pacific Fleet would have been forced to retreat to San Diego.

To the Japanese, the honor and glory was in the destruction of ships. Destruction of facilities gained a pilot nothing, save a better chance to win the war.

The strange thing was, they didn't need to destroy the battleships - the carriers would have been enough, because without air cover the ships weren't going anywhere, except to be sunk

But I wonder what they would have thought, if they had known the US would build another 80 carriers in the next three years or so

Charles II of England wore stilettos to his coronation

James I (England) washed only the tips of his fingers!

Empress Isabelle of Bavaria bathed in strawberry juice (perhaps the world's first smoothie?)

Roman Emperor Elagabalus invented a whoopee cushion whch he used at dinner parties (I bet he made a lot of friends back then)

An elective monarchy replaced the House of Kamehameha but ended when Queen Liliuokalani was deposed in 1893, not 1883 as I reported earlier. There has been no monarch of Hawaii for over 120 years. The original 13 states began as colonies subject to to the British Crown, not monarchies.
