When Catherine of Braganza came to England to marry Charles II she brought with her two pounds of tea. This was the first tea to be brought to England, and the beginning of our love affair with tea!

Charles II was the king that brought back the Crown Jewels, make-up, sport and plays and reinstated Christmas after Oliver Cromwell had banned it. No wonder he was loved by all and the monarchy had been restored.

Charles II did little save father a succession of royal bastards whose descendants until recently filled the House of Lords,Following the defeat and execution of His father Charles I,It was Parliament that called the shots.

We have a pretty witty king,
Whose word no man relies on;
He never said a foolish thing,
Nor ever did a wise one

I'll tell you one thing Charles II did do, and that was that he touched the best part of 100,000 of his subjects, or 2% of the population, for the King's Evil - scrofula. Now personally, I'm surprised that 2% of the population actually had scrofula, but that's another matter. It was considered that the monarch, due to his divine right (although his left hand was probably just as good), could cure this disease and the Touching For The King's Evil became an extremely popular event, drawing huge crowds. The practice was discontinued by George I - but Prince Charles is a well-known supporter of alternative therapies, isn't he, so perhaps he could reintroduce it and combine it with the modern royal tradition of walkabouts?

Oliver Cromwell didnt ban christmas, he banned celebrating christmas, thats why its still illegal to eat christmas pudding on christmas day.

What Charles II also did was to found the Royal Hospital at Chelsea. Its thought that Nell Gwynne actually suggested to him that a home for retired soldiers should be built, her father had been a soldier. In fact Nell Gwynne actually gave £200 towards the building costs. Uniquely for a military unit (if I can use the term) it has a chapel not a church. Apparently Charles II asked the Church of England for a donation, but they refused, probably as he was a Roman Catholic. So Charles decided it would have a chapel instead. And given her run ins with the C of E thats probably why Margaret Thatcher worshipped there.

It has been claimed that the act of eating a mince pie on Christmas Day is illegal in England. Festive celebrations, including mince pies and Christmas puddings, were reportedly banned in Oliver Cromwell's England as part of efforts to tackle gluttony. But the ban did not survive when Charles II became king. In fact, the Law Commission says none of the 11 laws that remained on the statute books after Cromwell's reign related to mince pies.
Souce: Illegal mince pies and other UK legal legends

On this subject, there was an episode of QI, that I've tried and failed to find a reference to, that dealt with the question of daft laws that have never been repealed. Stephen Fry said something to the effect that it was a misconception that certain things must still be prohibited or allowed just because they'd never specifically been removed from the statute books - they might have been superseded by more general laws. An example from the article linked above - you sometimes hear that in Chester it's perfectly legal to kill the Welsh, because in 1403, the Prince of Wales wrote to the authorities there, decreeing that "all manner of Welsh persons or Welsh sympathies should be expelled from the City; that no Welshman should enter the City before sunrise or tarry in it after sunset, under pain of decapitation".
Quote:
Fortunately for Welsh people, even if this was intended to incite the people of Chester to kill, the prince's order has since been superseded by murder and manslaughter laws, as well as the universal right to life under the Human Rights Act.
I know, it's political correctness gone mad.

[EDIT]
I've now found the specific bit of QI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLXWu...tu.be&t=36m51s

Funnily enough, he used the same example, which I'd forgotten.
