Default A&E Documentary on PB

I watched two episodes and it was pathetic. So obviously a #MeToo hit job on Hef, who is not around to defend himself anymore.

Endless clips of these bitter, dried-up old hags telling sob stories about how horrible their experiences as Bunnies and P-mates were. If it was so terrible, why didn't you get out of there?

You could have worked anywhere, and you chose a sex magazine where women's nudity was the focus of everything. What did you expect was going to happen?

Sounds like they went in chasing stardom and/or snagging a rich and famous husband. When it didn't work out that way, they blamed Hef for it all. Who forced you to do it?

Smile A&E Series

I watched the first episode and I will probably watch more. We have heard all these stories before. Naive young girls abused by older men. Most of the girls knew what they were getting into and knew what the men wanted. Some PMs and bunnies loved the experience and some hated it.

To me, the smartest girls were the ones that had their pics taken, went on the obligatory tours, put their money in the bank and left to lead good productive lives. There are PMs and bunnies that are doctors, lawyers, Real Estate executives, college professors, etc. Life is what you make it.

Yep. The ones who wanted to "make it in show business" had mostly sad lives. For every Pam Anderson or Jenny McCarthy, there were many who got a cameo as the "hot girl" on a TV series or two and that was it. They had nothing to fall back on. Many of them have had multiple failed marriages, maybe because years of partying at the Mansion is poor training to be a wife.

Ive only seen part one so far, but i do want to catch the rest. This series wants you to think the only celebrities who partied at Hef's Mansion were Bill Cosby and Roman Polanski. And some fat-ass bitch male journalist putting in his two cents, stating the outdoor fountain has a dolphin screwing a kid on the top.....what is this jagoff doing in this doc? I hate guy apologists trying to front for pussy.

Its easy to spot the straight white males who've never encountered real obstacles in their lives. They always have the most to say about oppression and discrimination. You guys would kill yourselves if you had to live like a black woman for a whole year.

ANYWAY, theres probably more documentaries on that one magazine than all the other magazines combined. I think the obsession with Hef and his lifestyle is more unhealthy than his actual lifestyle.

I've watched a couple.

The ones where the bunnies from the clubs were taken advantage of, I wouldn't support that.

The others, I have no real sympathy for. None of them were forced to pose nude. I agree with previous sentiments. They did it thinking they would become big stars. 99% of them disappeared from the public spot light once their month was up. That's the problem with being the playmate of the month...you're the talk of the town for your month, and in 30 days there will be another girl that comes along and bumps you off your throne.

Most of the posts in the two threads about this show are missing the point. It's not about the magazine content or posing nude, rather it has been a pretty damning indictment on the former Playboy empire. I think even Mindgeek has got to be considering changing the name of Playboy Plus to something else by now. But, to briefly summarize the allegations made to this point, with 4 episodes to go:

Episode 1: Most of the allegations came from a more recent book written by the daughter of Hefner's live-in doctor, but almost all of that was a rehash of a book from all the way back in 1986, Bunny: The Real Story of Playboy, which is currently available on the Internet Archive for online check-out. Fortunately, the author of the original, Russell Miller, is still alive and has been getting some serious air time on the show, because he deserves more attention for having broke this story first, 36 years ago.

So, there's nothing new: models were looked upon as look-alike commodities (of course, by the mid-90's, most of the Playmates started REALLY looking alike, and Photoshop was Hefner's true love), the sexual proclivities of Hefner (but this was a preview of a later episode), a mention of the suicides, overdoses, & the murder of Dorothy Stratten, and the continuing theme of Hefner's outsized influence making life difficult for former employees & models.

Episode 2: This entry focused on Holly Madison, who said that Hefner pressured others to take drugs before having sex with him, and made an effort to isolate the live-in women from the outside world. Also, Hefner kept tapes of the sex as a threat to release it as revenge porn should any of the women left. While many would say, "Just Leave", blackmail can be very convincing, especially given the acts mentioned in Episode 5.

Episode 3: The whole Playboy Club thing seems weird to me--spend lots of money just to look at the candy in the candy store from the outside window, so to speak?! This idea was not going to end well, and it ended up being tragic for many who worked at one of the clubs. This show was probably the most damning episode so far.

Because of the incidences of assault & rape outside of the clubs, Hefner formed a "clean-up crew", right out of Pulp Fiction, who made sure that no bunnies publicly spoke of these crimes. Be sure to read that again, Playboy Security didn't help these women after their assaults, or take them to the hospital, they were there to enforce silence. That's not acceptable.

Some big-name members were allowed to do much more, and not only get away with it, but not even be banned from the clubs. Don Cornelius, frankly, a total nobody whose protection mystifies me, was allowed to hold two bunnies captive for three days, tied in separate rooms. Furthermore, this POS sodomized one of them with a "wooden object", and Hefner's response? "It's all good, man." The other bunny escaped to call Playboy Security (why not the cops, though, seriously?, although 911 wasn't around yet), who just picked them up and took them home, despite their "bloody, battered, drugged" condition, after which they were summarily fired. WTF?!

In New Jersey in 1979, a group of bunnies were raped after being lured to an off-site location, by the old promises of "I'm a Hollywood producer", etc. This is a trope now, but in fairness, that was 1979. They were drugged, raped, videotaped, blackmailed, and fired by Playboy for their trouble.

Episode 4: Hefner had other people obtain mounds of drugs for his personal use. During the 70's, this was the responsibility of secretary Bobbie Arnstein, who was arrested and found guilty of possession of cocaine. Law enforcement was convinced (more like they convinced themselves) that Hefner was running drugs from the Chicago mansion and leaned on Arnstein to testify to crimes that didn't occur, going so far as to make sure that she was getting the maximum sentence if she didn't cooperate and implying to Arnstein & her lawyer that Hefner had taken a contract out on her life. She committed suicide under the pressure. While the government was at fault, so was Hefner for having a network of personal drug mules.

Episode 5: In case you needed corroboration for the rumors of Hefner's bestiality or blood-play habits, this entry is for you!

This episode focused on Sondra Theodore, who frankly had no business being anywhere near anything named Playboy. Unfortunately and admittedly, I found her story to be disingenuous and a case of arrested development. She was pressured to recruit other women for Hefner's orgies, a task that many women would find appealing. But, rather than saying that that wasn't for her, she did it anyway. Hefner did rob the cradle for a reason, however...it's easier to seduce the naive.

Even porn stars were grossed out by Hefner after a grand total of one evening at the mansion, the so-called "pig nights" with other celebrities. To me, the deconstruction of "The Playboy of the Western World" is comical, yet pathetic. This guy really did get psychologically stuck at around 12 years old.

Hefner was further accused of masturbating his dog as well as having Linda Lovelace drugged in order to perform fellatio on a German Shepherd. Yeah, the name Hugh Hefner is to be idolized.

Episode 6: This entry started out with accusations against Playboy Security for dropping the ball on Dorothy Stratten's suitcase pimp. That one is obvious.

More interestingly, one fact that I have personally heard about that was confirmed here was that a Playmate had to sleep with Hefner to be named Playmate of the Year. That would certainly explain so many of the weird choices, and more importantly, non-choices, over the decades.

While a glass ceiling for female employees, such as one-time Playmate Miki Garcia, is really not surprising, the sexual assaults of women in the workplace by Playboy upper management was a new allegation, and might still be actionable by authorities, hopefully.

It will be interesting to see if the last four episodes ends this series with a whimper, or a bang. I suspect it will focus on the corporate malfeasance discussed in Miller's book.

Many in the adult industry have been saying that Secrets of Playboy has been speaking ill of the dead, but that's because Hefner had a mafia-type operation ready to smear anyone who spoke ill about him while he was still alive. Of course, if you were on Hefner's periphery, he was a very nice guy, especially if you could do something for him. The closer you were to the inner sanctum, however, the Playboy dream appeared to be quite a nightmare.

For the sake of argument, I will stipulate that 80% of this was made up (probably not that high) for, well, no real reason, because Hefner and his empire are dead. But assuming that figure, I challenge anyone on this forum to seriously justify even 20% of this bullshit. Hefner had serious issues, all well known in Hollywood for decades (and posted about by myself for years here, based on the "Bunny" book), and a public righting of the historical record is definitely in order.

I wonder if the potential continuing existence of an enormous stash of Hefner-generated 'compromat' has any connection to the seemingly locked-down condition of the Playboy archive in general, and the obvious enormous gaps in public availability of the consensually-created erotica of beautiful women that many of us dream about seeing...

It was also revealing to see near the end in episode 4, which dealt with the drug abuse associated with Hef's milieu, the man himself giving one of the most cocaine-addled interviews I've ever seen - he's practically eating his own face. Gross.

In the long run, I'm glad that virtually none of my PMoTY picks (Marilyn Lange excepted) made it to the podium. Hot and classy ladies, I tell myself.

I have a childhood friend who worked at the Chicago and Lake Geneva club and who now heads up the PB Bunny re-unions held every other year. They have hundreds of very happy ex bunnies that have nothing but praise for Hef. They are not taking A&E series lying down (LOL) Like any corporation, you have some bad people that bring you down. Drugs were a part of society in the 70's and a few fed some of them drugs to take advantage of them. Sondra Theodore had a good life but was a Crack addict and it is said that Hef cut her off from $$. Miki Garcia had a position at PB HQ made up for her because she could even make it in real estate business. Miki lasted 2 years in that made up position because she couldn't even do that job properly.

It appears to me that it is a few bitter bunnies and staff attacking Hef after he is dead. My friend leads a normal and very wealthy lifestyle and owes much of it to Hef and PB. Just like her, many former bunnies lead a very good lifestyle thanks to Hef.

5-8 disgruntled employees VS 100's that disagree with them

Can you explain the part about Marilyn Lange at the end?
