Actually, I would expect the average public high school graduate to score poorly on a "citizenship test".
Most Americans know far too little about American history and government.

Today's elections are about personal popularity more than policy.
That's why Rush Limbaugh's "Low Information Voter" label is becoming so popular.

A thinking man of any political persuasion is an asset to his country and this board. Good to hear from you.

It is awfully tempting to think that someone who is too stupid and too lazy to bother thinking about who they will vote for or for what rational purpose is unfit to vote. But ignorant morons have to pay taxes and obey the law as well as inspirational figures such as ourselves. And is it all their fault?

I honestly believe that there is a conscious effort under way to encourage ignorance and stupidity, in order to make the population into sheep. This is a world trend, not apparent in the USA only. Some random shreds of evidence:
Television:
  • Big Brother and Celebrity Big Brother.
  • The Jeremy Kyle Show.
  • Deal or No Deal.
  • Virtually every soap opera ever made.
Politics:
  • Sarah Palin was taken seriously as a candidate for Vice President. That woman donated her brain to medical science.
  • Rick Perry wanted to be President and some people voted for him to be the republican nominee, when the man couldn't even remember his own campaign slogans.
  • Tony Blair is a Peace Envoy to the Middle East. This one reminds me of when Henry Kissinger won the Nobel Peace Prize and Truman Capote wrote: "Satire is dead." In this case, it certainly isn't TB who is ignorant and stupid.
  • Rick Santorum wanted to abolish schools, and people cheered when he said so. What clearer evidence could there be of an agenda to promote ignorance?
  • People treat Fox News and Rush Limbaugh as though they were sources of information.
Kulcha:
  • Katie Price and Kim Kardashian have their own TV shows.
  • People vote in reality TV shows.
  • Libraries are closing down everywhere you look. But its OK. They've opened a new one in San Antonio, Texas, which has no books in it.
  • On any given week, at least 8 of the top ten in the singles charts will be noise pollution marketed as music.
  • No one below the age of 30 knows any history unless they've studied it in their own time using Google.
In the words of Thomas Jefferson:
Quote:
If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilisation, it expects what never was and never will be.

Great by the examples, 'scountrel'.

All of it is part of the world of "Tittytainment". The word coining goes back on Zbigniew Brzezinski, the former national security adviser of Jimmy Carter. He should have created the word on the "Global Braintrust" in San Francisco.

No doubt, it was a serious suggestion on that meeting. It goes back on the increasing of the productivity; goods are getting produced with less and lesser people. (See the 20/80 society too).

It's contracted of the words "Titts" and "Entertainment"; where "Titts" is having the meaning of national aid and "Entertainment" to keep the masses quite.

An other term of this word coining goes back on the late Roman Empire and was called: "Bread and Games" (panem et circenses); also it's nothing new.

you hit it right on the nose man

...and they have almost succeded, how else can you explain george bush jr getting the presidency twice, a truly stupid man and military deserter, ronald reagen, the man who really started the shift of wealth from the middle class to the one-percenters being the most popular president ever, and mitt romney, an evil one-percenter incarnate, having made a living of destroying american companies and jobs and hiding his profits in offshore companies to avoid paying taxes getting 47 % of the votes, it's hilarious...and sadly for the american people president obama just proves they are totally fucked, wall street owns both parties

Maybe the USA should consider going over to a system of election for the Presidnecy similar to what Britain does for its Prime Minister? By that I mean vote for a party and not the person?

Whatever the term, the lack of a focus on a strong education for all means that we're in real trouble in the long, and short, term.

What is it with Republicans? Are they just born with perpetual foot in mouth disease? Here's a good one for you.

The Chairwoman of the State of Georgia GOP has suggested that straight people, if gays are allowed to marry, could enter into fraudulent gay marriages if someone needs some help with something; such as having problems paying for medical bills.

"You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow,” she told the Journal. “Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean, what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all about a free ride.”

Free ride? Granted, medical bills here in the US are a real problem. But having a gay marriage to get rid of them? Much more likely is that people would marry someone from the opposite sex.

Anyone here willing to get into a gay marriage to help someone out? Or just for the fun of it? And people wonder why Republicans have the IQ of carrots.

And on another front the revolving door continues. Was just watching Rachel Maddow and she had a couple of interesting stories.

First, Mary Schapiro, former Chairman of the SEC, has just taken a job with a company who's specific job is to show companies how to get around SEC regulations:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_2998131.html

So, she's not put one bankster in jail since 2008 and now she joins a company which is going to teach other banksters how to get around the regulations she helped put in place. No revolving door? And do we need a better example of official corruption?

Second, Gov. Ultrasound (Bob McDonnell, R VA) is now under investigation for corruption in his home state. Apparently, Ultrasound has a sugar daddy who'd been donating funds in an unusual manner. The Guv's daughter recently got married and, as it turns out, the wedding was a present from this donor:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/...a60_story.html

Seems Ultrasound's presidential aspirations are dimming fairly quickly.

One last thing about Republican idiocy. Its official? South Carolina Republicans have decided to run their former Gov., Mark Sanford, against Steven Colbert's sister for a seat in Congress:

This ought to be interesting to watch. I wonder how often he'll be hiking the Appalachian Trail this time?
