Gjon Mili
1904 - 1984
Born to Vasil Mili and Viktori Cekani in Korçë, Albania, Mili came to the United States in 1923. Trained as an engineer and self-taught in photography, Gjon Mili (1904 - 1984) was the first to use electronic flash and stroboscopic light to create photographs that had more than scientific interest. Since the late 1930s, his pictures of dance, athletics, and musical and theatrical performances have astonished and delighted millions of viewers, revealing the beautiful intricacy and graceful flow of movement too rapid or too complex for the eye to discern. His portraits of artists, musicians, and other notables are less visually spectacular, but equally masterful. In 1939, Mili became a freelance photographer working for LIFE. In the course of more than four decades, literally thousands of his pictures were published by LIFE as well as other publications.

Nina Leen
(1914 - 1995)


“Some pictures look posed that are not posed”

Nina Leen was one of the first women photographers for LIFE. She was born in Russia but grew up in Germany, Switzerland and Italy. She always wanted to be a photographer and her first camera, bought in Europe while she was still an amateur, was a Rolliflex that she continued to use throughout her assignments for LIFE. She is best known for her many pictures of animals, which grew from her fondness of them.
During her early years on the magazine, Nina Leen did a number of memorable stories about teenagers. As an expert observer of the manners and mores of her new country, her reactions to American youth were particularly acute. She photographed many fashion stories for LIFE and was a perceptive interpreter of “way of current life” stories.
Leen covered a wide variety of stories during her career. She is best known for her continuing story of a dog named Lucky which she adopted after it was found on a highway near death, and her famous 1950 photograph of the group of Abstract Expressionists, “The Irascibles”.
Leen published 15 books including Women, Heroes and a Frog; Love, Sunrise and Elevated Apes; and The World of Bats, an unprecedented photographic study in the behavior of bats.

Toni Frissell

Remembered today principally for her high-fashion photography for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, Toni Frissell (1907-1988) volunteered her photographic services to the American Red Cross, Women's Army Corps, and Eighth Army Air Force during WWII. On their behalf, she produced thousands of images of nurses, front-line soldiers, WACs, African-American airmen, and orphaned children.
Frissell's leap from fashion photography into war reportage echoed the desires of earlier generations of newswomen to move from "soft news" of fashion and society pages into the "hard news" of the front page. On volunteering for the American Red Cross in 1941, Frissell said: "I became so frustrated with fashions that I wanted to prove to myself that I could do a real reporting job." Using her connections with high-profile society matrons, Frissell aggressively pursued wartime assignments at home and abroad, often over her family's objections.
Frissell's work usually involved creating images to support the publicity objectives of her subjects. Her photographs of WACs in training and under review by President Franklin Roosevelt fit into a media campaign devised to counter negative public perception of women in uniform. Likewise, Frissell's images of the African American fighter pilots of the elite 332nd Fighter Group were intended to encourage positive public attitudes about the fitness of blacks to handle demanding military jobs.

Clifford Coffin

Photographer Clifford Coffin (1913-1972) is considered by many as the greatest of Vogue’s photographers – his photos was far ahead of his time… He worked for renowned magazines as Vogue, Glamour and Jardin des Modes in New York, Paris and London. As is so often the case, the images are so recognizable, but many people didn’t know anything about the man behind the camera.
His 1940s and 1950s innovative fashion photographs became art. As well as covering the couture collections for Vogue on 2 occasions(1948 and 1954), he took one of the few photographs of Christian Dior at his inaugural ’New Look’ collection in 1947. Clifford also launched the careers of a generation of models including Audrey Hepburn, Barbara Goalen and Suzy Parker, and discovered Elsa Martinelli, who modeled for him before turning to acting. Many of his models were captured at the outset of their careers: such as Gloria Swanson and Ernest Hemingway.

Regina Relang

1906 -1989

Regina Relang was born Regina Lang, in Stuttgart, Germany in 1906. Relang studed painting at the Kunstakademie Stuttgart and the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst Berlin. In 1932, Relang moved to Paris and began photographing travel and fashion from locations in southern Europe for Vogue and Die Dame. Her work also appeared in such magazines as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Bild der Frau. After the war, Regina moved to Munich and worked with Robert Capa, photographing for famous designers, such as Dior, Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent, capturing the evolving image of woman in the second half of the twentieth century. Photos of her presentations Haute Couture in Paris, appeared in all the fashion magazines in Germany and Europe. Her name became known in the late 70s and early 80s. Her spectacular images of the most forward, fashionable styles were featured twice a year in all of the major German fashion journals, for whom she represented the essence of the catwalk-shooting genre.
Regina Relang's hallmark photographs were masterly composed, and extraordinarily romantic and elegant. Before World War II, Relang was the darling of Paris haute couture in her country, Germany. Relang was honored with numerous photographic awards, such as the German Order of Merit in 1972. Relang died in Munich, Germany in 1989.
