Only then will you be able to see the index.dat file. Conclusion ? The Content.IE5 folder is super hidden!

reading that article it sounds like it would be wiser to leave the temp section well alone

I understand the point you are making. Firefox and Windows changed their approach to the cache and the use of temporary directories to protect against viruses. However, there are times that the only way you can track what is being written to your disc is to look in the cache.

I should have mentioned in my original post to avoid .dat files but it's second nature to me so I never thought about it. Good for you for mentioning them.

There are third party programs that will find and save files hidden from the end user, however, I have never used one so can I cannot make a recommendation. Using an external player has been my go to option as I am not aware of a virus attack that can come through such programs. That doesn't mean it can't happen it just means I'm not aware of them.

The file was not created in the temporary internet files folder either, but rather in a users/usename/appdata/low/xxxxxxxx temp folder way down in the structure. WTF?

I swear, Microsoft keeps getting more and more hostile towards the end user when it comes to doing basic stuff on your PC. I just found out that the old windows help is not even included on this OS, for Christ's sake.

Its mostly trial and error for us plebs i'm afraid

Like i have a free account on x h a m s t e r that i use occasionally (being bandwidth poor) which is one of the few streaming sites that says how much each download will be - with adobe flash removed I dont even watch the streaming just download.

Yep, I use that frequently, it plays just about everything. It will play stuff that WMP should, but doesn't, due to better codec support.

Looking in that DAT file, I saw there was a megabyte of empty space at the front of the file. I'm not real familiar with video formats, but my other mp4s that I looked at did not have this, soooo... I expect the site in question is doing some clever caching and file manipulation techniques in order to protect the movie files from being downloaded and saved.

Anyway, it does not seem to be a windows update that has killed my movie grabs, since I was able to grab 2 sample videos in mp4 and flv format out of the cache today.

Microsoft has certainly made the search for files harder, there is a bewildering array of temp folders on my PC in tons of different locations.

As I think buttsie was implying, if you can discreetly convey the name of the streaming site, then a bunch of us will descend on it like a flock of tech-adept porn vultures and if no video shakes loose, at a minimum we'll peck their eyeballs out.

Remove all the spaces and you get a direct link to the site with the movie. It's a sample from "Naughty Bookworms" with Evelyn Lin. Running this without trying to capture it in an external capture program should result in a large DAT file containing the movie being created somewhere on your machine. And you can take it from there...

Try using Replay Video Capture by Applian. It marks an area of the screen containing the moving image and creates a files from it. So - if you can play it on your PC - you can make a file of it. The free version gives you 2 minutes of recording only. No malware, easy to use and I have been using it for a long time with no problems. To buy it is about 25 GBP.

I was able to get it with a app called Any Video Converter and it can automatically download it to a .mp4 file for archiving purposes. It's freeware.

Clip downloaded OK with the firefox add-on i previously linked to
telling me the file download size - 60mb

Word to the wise many of these tube sites are now posted longer better quality clips up to 15 minutes....fools a few folks who think its the entire scene until it cuts out.

Best to venture to the website and see the running time to avoid that sinking feeling
If their not being up front sites like nude vista usually show a variety of running times
