Default Secunia

Perhaps most of you have heard of and/or use this program, but I wanted to bring it to your attention if not. It's called Secunia PSI. I use it to make sure all of my software is kept current and all of the security fixes are in place. It's free and works exceptionally well. It even offers a "one click" solution for fixes. Just thought I would pass it on for what it's worth.

From their website:
The Secunia PSI is a FREE security tool designed to detect vulnerable and out-dated programs and plug-ins which expose your PC to attacks. Attacks exploiting vulnerable programs and plug-ins are rarely blocked by traditional anti-virus and are therefore increasingly "popular" among criminals.

thread cleaned.

chatting : removed
thanks posts : removed
program requests : removed
duplicate recommendations : removed

further modifications will follow (recommendations overview grouped by main topics)

future usage:

in this thread, please only recommend a useful software.

add the location (URL) where people can download and inform about it and also leave a brief description of the software's purpose.

if you have questions related to a software or want to reply to a recommendation, please post them here with a quote: Useful Programs - Requests, Questions and Discussions.

If it's helpful to bundle questions and answers (because much instruction is necessary/available), we can start a thread about the software in the tutorial section by using good posts which were added to the discussion thread, or - if you are motivated - you can create a tutorial on your own.

we also can add a crosslink to such a tutorial in the related post where the software is recommended. this keeps information together and the focus over recommendations won't get lost between explanations, questions and pure chitchats.

thanks for understanding.

Default Some PDF Images Extract

...and yes, in spite of the name, it extracts all of the images.

http://www.somepdf.com/downloads.html

I had tried another PDF extractor a while back (I can't remember if it was recommended here or not), but it failed on every extract. I finally got around to looking around for another today, and found this nice one.

It's freeware, works quickly, and has a simple control setup. About the only thing it doesn't have is a snappy name (Some PDF Images Extract; what were they thinking?)

Post StaxRip - Encoding GUI

I would recommend StaxRip tto anyone who is casually interested in encoding movies but doesn't want the hassle of more advanced programs like Megui.

It supports various containers (avi, mp4, mkv etc.) and you can either do xvid or x264. It is fairly easy to use and creates good quality movies.

Take a look at this guide:

Oscar's File Renamer (Freeware) is a tool to rename files with a full featured Text-Editor. If you have hundreds of movie-files of your favorite TV-Series, for example, and you have found a list with the titles of the episodes online, you can copy it to clipboard and paste it to Oscar's File Renamer. Just add the File ending like avi or wmv etc. and klick o. k. Thats all. If there is any mistake you can also undo the last changes. For more information go to this site: http://www.mediachance.com/free/renamer.htm

It works on Windows 7 too.

Folder Guide (freeware) is a free handy utility that provides fast access to your frequently used and favorite folders. It can operate as the part of your context menu in your Windows Explorer.
After quick install it will appear in context menus of Windows Explorer and Open/Save dialogs as "Folder Guide" item. With Folder Guide, you no longer need dozens of mouse clicks to navigate to your desired folder. Now reach your favorite folders in just 2 mouse clicks. Select from right click menu "Folder Guide" then click on your desired folder. Folder Guide runs automatically as part of the Windows Explorer context menu, so you will never need to start the program otherwise you want to edit the list of folders. It also works from the desktop, the Start button.
