We in the U.S. are about half metric but a lot of very visible things are still imperial like Miles, Gallons etc. etc. - why we haven't switched is beyond me. But throwing off British rule was not exactly a hot topic in 1980.

I think the first metric system was a French law in 1795 or somethig. Then a certain Napoleon pushed it onto most of Europe. After that it just gets confusing.
NASA were metric in the 60's but you can still buy a pound (Livre) of cheese in France.
