I discovered the alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.* hierarchy in 1990 when grinding through FORTRAN (for undergrad engineering in CA, US) and in the computer lab's languid, late night and lackadaisical atmosphere, used a Netscape browser on a late 80's model Mac, to type in a search string based on a captioned photo that I had seen in a TIME or NEWSWEEK article on the subject of binary file transfers. So very boring a subject, apparently, they felt inclined to spice up the article a little by highlighting one of the wonderful uses of binary coding, and that is that the compression allows erotic images to be transferred on usenet newsgroups/hierarchies like 'alt.binaries.pictures.ero...' - the image of a vaguely wet and erotically facial posed model was the captioned photo that got my head looking at the otherwise useless idea of a web; hell I was a civil engineering undergrad, not computer and wtf? fortran? - which text string was partially displayed on the photo and caption.

I wonder how many masturbating fools like me discovered instant wanking material as a result from that circa 1990 article....?

I'm 40 now and got my first computer in 1996. I was never an expert on using newgroups, but I had some 9th-hand friend's of a friend's login to a BBS sytem called Ripco. As I can recall you could download pictures based just on text descriptions. SOme of the scans that now populate VEF's scan collection section are very familiar to me, though I never knew enough to actually follow scanners and assemble a real collection. There were a lot of vidcaps circulating then, too. Maybe nostalgia for that explains why I can't help but give 100 caps with my own posts! I especially remember a series of caps of the actress Nadia Nyce, the one of Indian descent, and I'd go on to track down her videos years later.

Within a couple years I was using Tommy's Bookmarks regularly. I also vividly remember when ads for Lolitasex with a model named Maria were everywhere you'd turn, and it was trying to track her work down a few years ago that led me to VEF.

And of course the damned pop-ups. I just finished closing some from 1998 a couple weeks ago!

Then the Retired Old Man (RoM) scans, mostly of PB newsstand specials, from Usenet. They seem to be lost to history and my inquiries in two different sections of the VEF were met with no response.

I started using email at work about 1992 or 93. Then I went to a continuing legal education seminar about the Internet. One of the speakers raved about this fabulous thing that had just come out, the miracle of all time called --Duh-Da!--Windows 95. I ran the office, so I junked all our word processors and got computers with HUGE hard drives that had a vast two gigs of memory and the magic Windows 95.

My first excursion on the Internet was to look up an ex-wife. Since she was a newspaper writer/editor, there was a lot of stuff by her. I also found her next three failed marriages. She really was hard to live with. But 25 years before she had done a smidgen of porn, which turned up. All black & white, alas.

My first internet porn experience dates back to 1996. Back then you only got low resolution pictures and one minute clips showing mostly blow jobs or cum shots. Decent porn was not free.


Persian Kitty was a good place for random pictures and before 2000 came Link-o-Rama, World Sex, Topcelebs, Free Ones, and Tommy's Bookmarks. Some of these sites had a focus on pornstars while others included amateur porn as well. A very good link site with a massive list of categories were Tiava which arrived in 2003 or so. Emergence of sites like rapidshare etc. made sharing large files (and by "large" I mean 100 MB) possible through forums like this. (Does anyone remember Another Site?) That's the first time I got access to free decent porn. Before you either had to use virus prone Kazaa like software and what not to watch blue movies or buy them at the store. I remember actually paying for Jenna Jameson, Nikki Tyler, Lexus Locklear Vivid compilations and a retro orgy DVD mostly of Cristy Canyon scenes in early 2000s.


Tube porn began with YP, XH, and XV in the second half of 2000s. Nowadays, most link dump sites do not even provide links to galleries and pictures. It's all videos.

I also found first internet porn from usenet binary groups. This was before world wide web become available. Many of the imaes were scanned from European porn mags (CCC, Silwa, Dollybuster etc) and some BBS address was just added to them (anyone remember Windy City?). resolution was quite low.
