Russia chose Christianity over Islam so it could drink alcohol

According to legend, Prince Vladimir the Great ruled Kievan Rus or medieval Russia from 980 to 1015. Prior to this, Russia was more pagan than anything so he decided to adopt a national religion. Since he also believed that part of “the joy of Rus is in drinking,” Islam was out and Christianity was in. Islamic tenets forbid drinking whereas Christianity, according to Prince Vladimir’s understanding, doesn’t.

The Soviet Union suffered devastating population losses during World War II, currently estimated at 27 million or nearly 14 percent of the prewar population. The disproportionate deaths of young men resulted in a drastic change in sex ratios among the population surviving the war. For example, the ratio of men to women in the 20-29 age group declined from .96 to .70 between 1941 and 1946. I use this large, exogenous change to identify the effects of unbalanced sex ratios on marital, fertility and health outcomes among women in the Russian republic in the postwar period. The results indicate that women in cohorts or regions with lower sex ratios experienced lower rates of marriage and fertility, and higher rates of out-of-wedlock births, abortions, and deaths from abortions than women in cohorts or regions less affected by war deaths.

Germany had similar demographics after the Second World War. . . lot of single mothers.

Contrast that with China who's ratio is the other way around as a result of their population control laws and the traditional pressure to have male offspring. (For those not aware, for some time now couples in many parts of China that have a daughter have a tendency to abandon it to die so they can try for a son again.)

The male/female ratios in China and India don't begin to get as skewed as the war losses in the Soviet Union. China and India may get to 52-48 or perhaps 53-47 male:female

The post WWII Soviet Union, was, in young male demographic (20-29) 30-70 (male:female), a massive distortion.

Here's a population pyramid for Russia, notice the huge skewing in the birth years 1910-1925, cohorts where young men were most likely to be killed in the War

There was a earlier question about beer not being considered alcohol prior to 2011. It was true and beer was sold for almost nothing at corner kiosks. Junior high kids were swigging the stuff on park benches before classes started in the morning.
